Newly-opened 4YP is all for the young people
Ipswich Town chairman David Sheepshanks has officially opened the town's first healthy living centre dedicated to young people. Mr Sheepshanks was joined by first team players Fabian Wilnis and Richard Naylor at the opening ceremony of 4YP (for young people). The mayor and mayoress of Ipswich, Roger and PAt fern, and a group of youngsters were also in attendance at the event.
Suffolk Young People's Health Project (SYPHP) will provide the services for youths aged between 12 and 25 in Ipswich and the surrounding areas, who visit the centre at 14 Lower Brook Street. It will offer them work and voluntary placements, contraception and sexual health screening, information and support services from Community education and access to the youth team at Charity NORCAS, which gives information and advice on drugs and alcohol. It also has laundry and shower facilities, access to computers and the internet, home tutors as well as housing and homeless advice.
Dawn Henry, chief executive of SYPHP, said: "Ultimately, we want young people to think of the centre as a place they can come to seek help and support with confidence that they will not be judged. However, this is only half the story. The 4YP services cannot afford to stand on their laurels, we must evolve with young people and the community as a whole. It is intention to let those young people who use 4YP to work with staff and trustees to help develop the centre's future."
Mr Sheepshanks said:" We are pleased to be involved in this project which is one of our chosen charities for the year. These youngsters are the future of Ipswich and Suffolk."
