Housing Support
Much like the Age Concern Suffolk Independence Advice service, this new (pilot) project
is designed to help people live independently, in the home of their choice.

This is a pilot project which will last until 9th January 2009. The service will provide advisers who will develop a Support Plan with you, having first assessed your needs. These needs might include needing assistance or support with accessing aids or adaptations for the home, community alarms, locating health or social links, accessing financial support (benefits and budgeting) or you may need assistance with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning or general house maintenance.

Our trained and insured advisers will offer all the support they can; where they cannot support you directly they will give you details of other support organisations who can help with things such as personal care, domestic support, and other services such as handyman/van services and good neighbour schemes.

Whilst the aim is to help people stay in their own home, support is also available to people who do want to make a move, say into a ground floor flat, a bungalow or into supported accommodation.

This project has been funded by Supporting People and will be used to investigate what support is required, by who and where.

Age Concern Suffolk is delivering this service in Waveney and Mid Suffolk District Council areas, Ipswich Borough Council and Havebury Housing Partnership are delivering this service in the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Borough areas.

For those living outside of these areas please phone your nearest Age Concern Suffolk help desk. For people currently living in supported accommodation (Sheltered or Very Sheltered) then this support is already available through your housing provider.

LANDS END TO JOHN O’GROATS –

SPONSORED BIKE RIDE TO RAISE MONEY FOR AGE CONCERN SUFFOLK

Thomas Welham, a 23 year old young man from Ipswich, who alongside his father runs several pubs, including the Maypole, Old Norwich Road has taken up the challenge to cycle 1000 miles from Lands End (the southern most point of the UK) to John O’Groats (the northern most point) to help raise funds for Age Concern Suffolk.

Thomas said “I wanted to raise money for older people as they are often the people we forget about…the ones that told us bedtime stories when we were young, fought for us in times of need – our living history. Whilst many of us have elderly relatives totally self sufficient, who we love and would care for if needed, some have no family, are less mobile than they used to be, surviving on an inadequate state pension and struggling. I want to support Age Concern Suffolk who provide many services for older people to help them remain independent and enjoy later life and to feel less isolated”.

“Please sponsor me as I am aiming to take between 7 – 14 days to complete the trip with the help of my father who is towing the caravan behind - so I have somewhere to lay my head at night and to encourage me on the way.”

Maggie James, Fundraising Officer said “we are delighted that Thomas has offered to do this fantastic challenge to help raise funds for Age Concern Suffolk. We are celebrating 60 years of providing services for older people in Suffolk this year and it is our aim this year to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee 60th anniversary by holding a series of events and activities to raise awareness of our services, and to show how we have grown as a charity in response to the needs of older people over the years. We also want to celebrate the contribution older people make within the community and to use the year to continue to highlight our need for funds.”

If you would like to sponsor Thomas please contact him on 07955441106 or call in at one of the various pubs (see list below) where you can add your name to his sponsor forms or contact me on 01473 298688 or email maggie.james@ageconcernsuffolk.org.uk.
