Some years ago, Channel Four’s
Time Team spent several days conducting an archaeological dig at
East Farm in Barnham and unearthed several significant artifacts,
some of which are now on display in the British Museum. Evidence
was also found that some 400,000 years ago, exotic species such as
lions, rhinos and elephants roamed the area.
The Domesday Book records the population of Barnham in 1086 as
36.
In 1730, much of Barnham was bought by the second Duke of Grafton,
and became part of the Euston Estate. Although much of the
land is still owned by the Estate, most of the houses are now
privately owned.
Near to Barnham village is RAF Barnham - built originally in the
50's for the storage and maintenance of atomic weapons. The
weapons were moved away in the early sixties and the bomb store was
converted to a small industrial
estate.
