The Parish Council completed
the refurbishment of the war memorial as part of their millennium
project and annually, since 2001, services of
remembrance have been held around the memorial. These services are
always well supported by the local community. On a day during the
school week near to each Remembrance Sunday, the school,
together with the local community also hold a 'Service of
Remembrance'.
A 'Chaplet' shaped wreath was supplied by a local resident for the
Parish Council to lay during the ceremony. The Parish Council
accepted this heartfelt gift and therefore did not purchase a
wreath until the resident was no longer in a position to do so. The
Parish Council now lay a 'Chaplet' shaped wreath each year with
the words on the card remaining as she had requested:
'From the residents of Bentley - In
Remembrance'.

Answer to the question - when
do residents of Bentley think that the wreaths should be
removed from the War Memorial?
At the 3 June 2009 Parish Council meeting
it was agreed to remove the Parish Council 'chaplet' wreath, the
Comrades wreath and the crosses laid by Bentley CEVCP school
pupils and staff. Agreement from the Royal British Legion
(East Bergholt Division) would be sought for the removal of their
wreath. If agreement is reached then in future years all
the wreaths and crosses will be removed on the 1st
June.
