Blaxhall is a secluded village of 123 house’s
split in two parts, the larger being Mill Common, with Stone
Common a smaller hamlet, total electoral roll 178.
The village is situated approximately 2 miles off the A12
halfway between Woodbridge to the south and Aldeburgh to the east,
with the famous Snape Malting Concert Hall a mile a way. The
village no longer has a shop or post office but these can be found
either at Campsea-Ashe or Snape, there is a farm shop within 2
miles of the village.
What was the village school, built in 1881 by John Sheppard, during
the early part of the last century had an average attendance of 100
pupils but was closed in 1976. This is where George Ewert Evans
lived when he wrote the famous book “Ask The Fellows Who Cut The
Hay”, the old school is now a very distinctive Youth Hostel housing
48 beds. The hostel has been completely revamped recently and
modernise with disabled access and
accommodation. | |
