Facts
Violence and abuse within lesbian,
gay, bisexual or transgender relationships occurs at the same
frequency as heterosexual relationships. (It is estimated that
within same sex couples 1 in 4 is a victim of domestic
violence or abuse.)
22% of lesbians and 29% of gay men
have experienced physical, mental or sexual violence in a same
sex relationship.
87% of women and 81% of men did not
report it to the police.
56% of lesbians and 54% of gay men
who have been in abusive relationships said they had been
physically hit
18% of lesbians and 22% of gay men
said they were sexually abused or forced to have sex with
their partners.
A website set up for same sex
domestic violence has had 2500 + hits in it's first year. 2000
more than the group expected.
More than 80% of same sex domestic
violence is not reported to the police. It is believed that
transphobic and homophobic domestic violence under-reporting
occurs at a similar rate.
There are approximately 6 million
LGBT people living in the UK.
