Making sure that retail businesses selling poisons are registered with Suffolk County Council and that they store and sell poisons safely. List of the poisons that require a licence (28k).


Sellers of poisons must either be a retail pharmacist or a person who has his name on Suffolk County Council's list of those entitled to sell poisons (a listed seller). Details of the place where the poisons are sold must be included on the list.  The trading standards service maintain the list in Suffolk.

A listed seller or their named deputy can sell only certain specified poisons and subject to certain conditions.

Fees must be paid to the local authority by businesses wishing to have their names on the list.

Each listed seller is required to keep a poisons book in which certain information relating to each sale of a poison must be entered before a sale is completed.

Trading standards officers inspect business premises selling poisons to ensure they are on Suffolk County Council’s list,  that only approved poisons are sold and that these are stored and recorded correctly.

Trading standards will provide free advice to local businesses that store or sell poisons regarding their legal obligations.
