'Wenlock
Olympic Medal'

Inspired by
the 2012 return of the Olympics to the UK, this
particular client, a resident of Much Wenlock, Shropshire (the
birthplace of the founding father of the modern Olympics: Dr
William Penny Brookes) wanted tiles hand painted with the design
based on one of the Wenlock Olympic medals. Using resource photos
of one of the medals in their local museum, we hand
painted the designs in Delft blue onto 15cm x 15cm crackle glazed
tiles.

The founding father of the modern Olympics, Dr
William Penny Brookes, was born in the town of Much Wenlock in
Shropshire in 1809. He campaigned internationally (and
eventually, successfully) for the revival of the ancient Greek
Games. In 1850 he launched his Wenlock Olympian classes and
encouraged outdoor recreation by awarding annual prizes, medals and
cups to the locals for skill in athletic exercise. Sadly,
Dr Brookes died, aged 87, just four months before the first
international Olympic Games were held in April 1896, never knowing
his dream was achieved.
