A guide to car keys and
remote controls in one.
- A mechanical key will release the steering
lock
- A coded 'electronic transponder chip' is read by the car
when the key is inserted in the ignition
- A remote control will unlock the doors and turn off the
alarm
Transponder keys
- Electronic, coded transponder chips embedded in the
plastic body of the key were introduced from 1995. The chip is
passive, so it doesn't need a battery – the code is read when you
turn the key in the ignition.
- If the transponder chip is broken or missing, the engine
won't start.
- You will need to return to the dealer if you wish to
replace your key. The dealer will have to reprogram the
immobiliser's control unit to recognise the new key code. Or ring
us and you be back on the road without the fuss.
Master keys
Many early cars were supplied with a 'master key' (often
red), which was not intended for normal use. The dealer uses the
master key to programme a new or replacement key for the car. You
may be told by the dealer if you have lost your keys including the
master key you will have to replace your immobilizer. This is not
so, give us a ring we can have you back on the road within the hour
in most cases.
Early Fiats up to 1999 had a red key system, also Honda,
and Fords. A Dealer will tell you that.
nfortunately, if you damage
or lose the master key it could cost hundreds of pounds to replace.
You may have to replace the complete engine management system
costing more than £1,000.This is the normal procedure or ring us we
can add new keys into the E.C.U {Electronic Control Unit}or into
the Immobilizer unit without replacing the system saving you time
and money.
- From 2000 onwards Car manufacturers have virtually stopped
using master keys. They now hold car-specific security information
in a central database, which the dealer uses when reprogramming the
car and a replacement key. If you haven’t got any Security
Information E.g. Carpass or key number/pin code we can obtain this
for you but we will require a copy of your V5 Document and two
copies of a House Hold Bill with your name and Address on all. And
a payment before we come out to you.
- Note we are Auto Locksmiths and can obtain the information
we need to get you on the road within the hour in most
jobs.
Rolling codes
Early transponders 'fixed codes' – the key sends exactly the same coded
signal every time it's used.
- Keys with 'rolling codes', which means the transponder
code changes every time the key is used, were introduced from 1999
and are now very common.
- These should be virtually impossible to copy. They offer
improved security but they're even more expensive to replace if
lost.
- Time and cost vary from manufacturer to manufacturer –
expect to pay around £100 and wait up to three days for a
replacement key. Unless you give us a ring and you could be on the
road today!
- The key might be even more expensive to replace if it
includes a remote control for operating central locking and the
alarm. We supply cut and program most Keys and Remotes on site so

We had a customer with
a toyota yaris who had lost her remote key,the Dealer told her they
would have to replace the ecu.
After she had talked to us we had the vehicle back on the road
within the hour job done cheaper,faster and no Headache!

A body shop had a Lexus IS200 which they had in for repair. Before
they had sprayed it the keys were put on top of the roof and the
roof was covered over with sheeting.
Yes the keys was thrown
away the bin men came that morning they phoned Lexus and were
Quoted £1200 to recover the car replace the E.C.U and new keys and
it would take two days for the parts.
Then they gave us a
call, the car was delivered back to the customer the same day and
the body op saved hundreds of pounds.
We had a
customer phone one evening who had a suzuki jeep 2005 year he had
been on Holiday in great yarmouth .He could not turn his Ignition
and had to leave the holiday cottage in two hours as he had a three
hour drive home! We arrrived found what the problem was removed
stripped and refitted his Ignition{looked like a very expensive
Ignition Lock)And he was on his way home Another Happy
Customer.....SAVING HIM TIME MONEY AND

We had a customer who
lost his keys at the local council tip on a fiat punto 2003 model.
He phoned the Dealer and was told these keys are pre-programmed and
have to come from the Factory it will take 3-5 days and the car
will have to be recovered. He then phoned us and was back on the
road within the hour of us arriving.
A chap phoned one day
and told us that he was a delivery driver{we won’t mention the
company}and had lost his keys down the toilet where he was
delivering and the transit van was full of parcels and blocking the
customers driveway .He was very pleased to see us!
We
did a job for a lady on a sunday who had lost there keys for a
Toyota Yaris.As you may know if you have lost your keys to any
toyota or lexus it can be expensive as the dealer will replace the
main brain for the vehicle the ECU,depending what year it is or
thay replace the Immobilizer unit still both very expensive.We dont
replace either so you have saved money and we do it on site.We
dont take the units away or send them off,everything is done the
