Church FrontSt John the Baptist Church, Campsea Ashe is an
interesting Church, with parts relating to various centuries.
Passing through the 20th century lychgate, given by the
villagers to commemorate the coronation of King George 6th. in 1937.
You immediately see the tall 14th century tower.
As you enter the tall well proportioned 14th century inner door
you see, under the demi angel-carbels supporting the tower arch,
the 14th century font.
The red brick vestry dates from Tudor times.
The organ chamber, just before the vestry on the north side of the chancel,
was added during the 1800s.
During the 1869 restoration the chancel and porch were faced
by flint and arches of squared knapped flint  worked over the windows.

The first Vicar is recorded as being appointed in 1312

The present Rector is the Rev.Canon Harry Edwards,
who lives at Marlesford Rectory.

Today the four bells date from 1601, 1615, 1714 and 1729, these were rededicated in June 1999 following extensive repairs and consolidation work.
On January 1st 2000 they rang, joining with others all over the country, to celebrate the new millennium.
The present Tower Captain is Mrs Glenys Fear and bell practice is from 9am -10.30am on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturday of every month.

THE BELLS PROJECT
The Bells project was started in September 2007 with an open day for people to visit the church , view the displays and listen to the bells being rung.  Some climbed the steps to the ringing chamber and saw bell ringing in action, some even had a go themselves
The aims of the project are to  restore  the 4 bells already there and add 2 more bells.
The leaking roof will also be repaired, the steps made safer and  a gallery around 15 feet above ground restored to use as a ringing gallery, the original gallery was removed in the 19th century.
One of the new bells will be dedicated to the residents of Campsea Ashe.
Fund raising is already underway and you can find out how to help and  learn more by going to the Church website at www.campseaashechurch.org.uk
