Hello, my name is Carol Sheward and I am the Homing Officer for the Framlingham & Saxmundham branch of Cats Protection.  Originally called  “The Cats Protection League” when it was formed in 1927, our main aims are to:

1 )   RESCUE STRAY AND UNWANTED CATS AND KITTENS AND TO REHABILITATE AND REHOME THEM WHERE POSSIBLE.

Each day, Cats Protection as a whole, rehomes 150 cats and kittens, which amounts to about 60,000 annually.   Each year we help over 170,000 cats & kittens and over the past five years we have been able to reunite approximately 20,000 lost cats with their owners.   We have about 30 purpose built shelters throughout the UK and recently opened the NATIONAL CAT CENTRE in Sussex which can shelter up to 500 cats whilst they wait for a new home.   However, around 90% of the cats rescued by us are cared for in ‘foster homes’ by wonderful volunteers.

2)   ENCOURAGE THE NEUTERING OF ALL CATS NOT REQUIRED FOR BREEDING.
A female cat could be responsible for over 20,000 descendants in five years.   Cats Protection maintains a £3 million neutering scheme for cats with owners on low incomes. And in 1998, we launched the country’s first mobile neutering clinic.  Purchased with Lottery funding, the clinic is currently based in the North of England, with plans for it to tour the other regions, and on average has neutered a dozen male and female cats per day.

3) TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ON THE CARE OF CATS AND KITTENS.

Cats Protection provides a Helpline on  08702 099099.   Whilst the advisors cannot provide specific veterinary or legal advice, they do offer general information on a range of subjects ranging from behaviour to quarantine.  They also assist callers wishing to adopt a cat or who must give up their cat for various reasons.

There are also colourful and informative curriculum -based school packs designed to educate children about animal welfare, particularly that of cats and many of our branches produce a Newsletter to keep cat lovers informed of local events.
FRAMLINGHAM & SAXMUNDHAM BRANCH produce a Newsletter which is sent to those holding membership with copies also available at our local Veterinary Practices, and we think it is pretty special.

WELL THAT’S ENOUGH ABOUT FACTS AND FIGURES FOR ‘CATS PROTECTION’ OVERALL.   LET’S LOOK A BIT CLOSER AT ‘FRAM & SAX’. YOUR LOCAL CAT-CARERS.
