WEBSITE STATISTICS for JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2010
Well for another couple of months there has been much activity on this website if readership levels are to be believed; and statistics don't lie!!
We have been supplied with the figures for January and February. You will no doubt be pleased to note that the latest statistics issued by OneSuffolk (our website host server) indicate that we recorded 459 separate hits in January and 439 in February (well up from November's good 402).  This maintains our position in 9th place out of the 146 Parish and Town websites. Remember the 146 other websites include much larger towns and villages than us such as Bury St. Edmunds etc. Once again a really good result!  Thanks once more for your support.

Local Villages' Bus Service

The website received the following email:

The 511 Community Bus currently serving Halesworth & Holton will commence a TRIAL bus service for Walpole, Cookley, Linstead Parva, Chediston, and Wissett residents from April 6th 2010.

This is an authorised route approved by the Traffic Commissioners for approx four months. If the TRIAL proves successful with passenger 'take up', we will apply for the route to be made permanent.

All bus passes are accepted including Youth passes. There are no bus stops, passengers simply raise their hand wherever they are on the route (to be advised in due course) and the driver will stop. Single adult fare is £1.00, reduced fares for children. The bus is a white 15 seater Mercedes known as The HOPPA, you cannot miss it. It will be a daily service except Thursdays and weekends.

Full details to be published in Community News in March, timetables will be available around the town, and for the said villages.

This service is for ANYONE to use for shopping, surgery, local hospital, and social reasons. All drivers are volunteers, and are fully trained under MIDAS rules.

SNOW CLEARANCE FOR VILLAGES
At the recent Parish council meeting I raised the following:

As the Local Authority considers it unnecessary to grit our village roads, I would like the Parish Council to consider allocating a reserve from the PC precept or the use of part of the PC Deposit Account funds in order to ensure that our roads are gritted and salted during the winter as necessary. As a last resort this could entail local landowners having a reserve store of salt/grit to be used when required. If this cannot be spread by volunteer labour, then paid labour should be used.

David Mantell

SNOW CLEARANCE FOR VILLAGES
SALC (Suffolk Association of Local Councils) has issued the following to Parish councils:

There have been many cncerns raised recently regarding grit bins and the Counties Grit Bin Scheme and also regarding individuals liability who are kind enough to grit the highway.
Please find below a link that explains the scheme we have in place and also be aware that Suffolk County Council will add individuals to their insurance if they are carrying out gritting on the highway in the agreed fashion.

JANUARY BAD WEATHER ADVICE AND INFORMATION

Read this.  Click on the Link: BadWeatherAdvice2010.pdf

TELEPHONE BOXES

As you probably know the red telephone boxes in Chediston and Linstead are under threat of removal. BT intends to close them down and is asking the Parish Council to adopt the empty boxes. The Parish Council will not own them but will be resposible for their upkeep. The District Council has confirmed that neither of them are subject to preservation orders. If parishioners are in favour of keeping the boxes could they advise the Chairman of the council Mr g Downing or the Vice Chairman Dr Heath as soon as possible.  The parish council reply has to be back with  BT by 2 January 2010.
Both the Linstead and Chediston Councillors felt they would like to retain the red telephone boxes. The only concerns were insurance, how much it would cost to maintain them and whether this was really what the parishioners would want money spent on. The clerk was asked to contact David Mantell to see if the matter could be put on the local website to see the response from the people of the villages.

So let's have your opinions. Click on the Contact Us tab and give your views that will be passed on to the Parish Council.

A THANK YOU FROM MAGGIE PEPPER

Surprise Champagne and birthday cake is always welcome but what a shock it was when at the end of a beautiful Baptism service for Edwina and Ian's daughter Hannah, Edward announced that I was '70'! However I was delighted to share this moment in time with friends even though one doesn't expect the Rector to spill the beans in Church!
'Thank you' to all those who organised the occasion; to Nesta for a delicious chocolate cake and to all my friends for their cards and good wishes.  I greatly appreciate all your kindnesses.
Best Wishes - Maggie

WEBSITE STATISTICS for NOVEMBER 2009

Rather quicker off the mark than last month, we have been supplied with the figures for November. You will again be pleased to note that the latest statistics issued by OneSuffolk (our website host server) indicate that we recorded 380 separate hits (slightly down on October).  However, this positions us in 13th place (up from last month's 15th) out of the 150 Parish and Town websites.  Bearing in mind this includes much larger towns than us such as Ipswich etc., we achieved a pretty good result again!  Thanks once more for your support.

HOME-START SUFFOLK COASTAL

Your Parish Council has requested that the following be placed on the website:

Home-Start Suffolk is a local voluntary organisation that supports families across the district including Chediston, Linstead Parva and Linstead Magna. They visit families with one or more children under five who are going through a difficult time for any reason eg. illness or disability in the family, isolation, housing or money problems or mental health issues.  They recruit and train volunteers who are then matched 1 to 1 with a family to bring friendship, build a relationship and offer whatever suport is needed.

HORSE OWNERS

A scheme aiming to reduce rural and equine crime. Membership tp Suffolk Horsewatch is free.  Ideally every horse owner should be registered on the POLICE DIRECT system to help reduce certain crimes by being aware of them in the first place.  This is a free communication service between you and Suffolk Police via a high-tech messaging facility. You can choose how you want to receive messages - email, text, voice mail, landline or all of these.

If you want more details, please contact your Neighbourhood Watch coordinator or email horsewatch@suffolk.pnn.police.uk

GO WITH THE FLOW BUS PROJECT

Go with the Flow, the Suffolk Coastal youth bus project, is now up and running. We are calling regularly at Yoxford (Sundays), Saxmundham (Fridays) and Wickham Market (Thursdays where we stay from 7 – 9 pm. The double decker bus is unmistakeable with its bright blue livery. The design and colours were the work of young people in the Suffolk Coastal area and the bus interior is also fitted out in line with their suggestions. There are spaces to chat, watch DVDs, play games or work on Apple Mac computers. Wednesday night is our floating night. Each Wednesday we will visit a different village in the Suffolk Coastal district area.

‘Go with the Flow’ is for 13 – 19 year olds and so far the feedback from the young people using the bus has been overwhelmingly positive. They are pleased to see us and sorry when we leave. Word is spreading. More and more young people are getting to know when we will be visiting their area and coming on board.

The bus is staffed by a driver and youth workers from Suffolk ACRE and Suffolk County Council youth services. The project is part of Suffolk’s strategy to ensure all young people have access to positive activities in safe environments. Funded in part by the National Lottery, Go with the Flow has only been possible through the hard work and support of a wide range of agencies, local businesses and individuals including Suffolk Coastal District Council, Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk County Council, local schools and Young Suffolk (representing the voluntary and community sector). We are continuing to fundraise to ensure we can keep the ‘show on the road’ and reach as many young people as possible.

We are always on the look out for volunteers to help out - either on the bus or behind the scenes. If you are interested in getting involved, contact Jon Denny on 07876680909 or jon.denny@suffolkacre.org.uk . Our website address is www.gowiththeflowbus.com

CHEDISTON NOTICES

JOHN EDWARD INGATE HURREN

HURREN John Edward Ingate. Passed away on February 21, aged 78 years. Former farmer of Chediston. Loving uncle of Robin, Emma and Johnathon. His funeral will take place at Gorleston Crematorium on Wednesday, March 10, at 2.40 p.m. Family flowers only. MARQUEE HELPERS

As you are probably aware Chediston owns a marquee that is hired out locally a couple of times year, the income being used to help finance other village events. Helpers are needed to transport, erect, dismantle and transport back the marquee.  If helpers cannot be found to take on these tasks then the marquee cannot be hired out and no income will result.  Hirers pay £20 directly to the helpers for their services. If you would be able to assist, please use the 'Contact Us' tab on this website.

TRIBUTE TO PEGGY BODINGTON

It is with sadness that we have learned of the passing of Peggy Bodington.  She had been a long time resident of Chediston having purchased Church Farm along with her late husband in the years following the second world war.  Peggy soon became part of church life and for many years a valued member of the P.C.C..  Whilst at Church Farm she hosted a church fete and on one occasion organised a competition inviting people to submit their own “creations” to be judged “as the best”.  This she advertised nation wide in the “Farmers Weekly” which resulted in a large number of entries, the ultimate winner coming from the Eye area of Suffolk and a model of a wind mill made from used match sticks gaining the winners prize.

Whilst at Church Farm Peggy obtained a position of ward sister at the now closed Blythburgh hospital, following the death of her husband she eventually sold Church Farm and moved to Rose Cottage in the village a property that they had purchased whilst at Church Farm to house a worker.  She later obtained a position as matron of the “Hospital for Incurables” at Putney in London but her home base was Chediston and her support for the church remained strong and articles made by the patients at the hospital found their way to Christmas Fairs at Chediston and anyone who was fortunate enough to have bought any of the items can vouch for the creative spirit which must have gone into there making.  Her support for the village carol singers in Chediston was strong until the end her donations always arriving on time and at our last village “sing” in 2007 Peggy “stayed up” to give her generous donation.

After her death there was found in her house a photograph of Peggy with the Late Queen Mother, on her Majesty’s visit to the “Hospital for Incurables” at Putney.

JOHN'S CAR CLEANING SERVICE

You will have noted that we have another entrepreneur in Chediston - John Martin - who has set up a Professional Car Cleaning and Valeting service.  As you may know John owns and exhibits his own classic car so what he doesn't know about car presentation probably isn't worth knowing!  Let's all support him in his new venture. ANCESTOR TRACING

The website received the following email:

' I am sorry to bother you, but I wondered whether you would be able to help me find a possible ancestor?

I am looking for the christening (and therefore the parents) of John Vinson born 1832/3 in Chediston.  He married a girl called Maria Capon from East
on in Suffolk in 1864, and I have traced him back via census returns to his grandson on the Falkland Islands.

I did find a Harriet Vinson in the 1861 census living in the Almshouses, widow aged 77, and a Horace Vinson born in 1846 in Chediston, living in 1861 at the Manor House as a carter aged 15 and unmarried.

I am in Newbury, Berkshire and as I am a disabled pensioner would find it very difficult to get to your area and would greatly appreciate it if someone could trace that christening for me.

Many thanks,

Sandra M. Wright' (swright469@btinternet.com)

CHRIS COLLIER

Chediston has good reason to be proud of Chris Collier. We are infomed that as part of his Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme activities, he is supposed to carry out regular community based activities. Chris has decided to apply that to Chediston Churchyard. A few days ago (Oct 26th) Chris carried out 1 1/2 hours cutting the grass from around some of the gravestones to the rear of the church, close to an area that our regular volunteers keep clear. Chris is intending to do more in the very near future, weather permitting. His longer term aim is to regularly clear and trim the grass from around these gravestones.  Well done Chris and thanks from Chediston!

CHEDISTON CHARITY

The charity the PCC/village are supporting from now on is East Anglian Children's Hospices (rather than Action Aid which has received our support for the last few years).

These wonderful places provide help and support to children with life threatening illnesses and also their families.  This consists of day care, overnight breaks in the hospice, therapies such as music, physio, occupational and specialist play, and end of life care in the family home or the hospice.

There will be fund raising during the year for this charity and monies raised may well be delivered during an open day.  The first event to raise money was the pancake evening in the School Room (see report under Events Report).

Please support this local, very well worthwhile charity during the year.

CHEDISTON VILLAGE SIGN

You may recall that we posted the following a while ago:

Would you like to see an ornamental Village sign for Chediston?  If so what kind of design and where best to site it? This subject was raised at the latest Parish Council Meeting and we have been requested to elicit views on the website. Let us have your views by using the Contact Us tab.

Here is one view sent to this website:

'Village Sign - I rather like the idea, and I'm sure we could have one made within
the skills of the village - certainly the sign, if not the pole. I would favour a sign
depicting St. Chedd on top of the huge stone which he is supposed to have stood
on to preach to the people.

Several positions spring to mind:- near the telephone box/ on the verge as one
enters the village street from the B1134/ or near the field gate near the Farmstead
(Jo Wareham's new house).'

Let's have your views on this debate please

And here is a further response:

Dear Webmaster,

Checking out the progress of the Chediston bells, I was most interested to see that the idea of a village sign is being considered for the village.

Ever since I became involved with the provision of a sign for Brundish, which was erected on 19th July last year to coincide with the opening of our new village green, I have become compelled with the subject. Suffolk, of course has plenty to choose from, and some are the most beautiful forms of public art.

I am a member of the Village Sign Society (Anorak? Me!) They are of a great deal of help to those people just starting to look and I have some contacts for you to consider if you are of a mind.

I would be very interested to hear of any progress you make. There are, of course, plenty of excellent crafts people from which you can chose. I understand that Easitron at Linstead Parva have made a sign for Southolt.

Please do keep me informed, and if I can help in anyway, information etc, please do contact me.

David Mulrenan
Brundish.

CHEDISTON CHURCH MOWER

We are very pleased to announce that we have a sponsor for the maintenance and any repair to our ride-on mower.  Glen Wing has kindly agree to be our sponsor and look after the mower.  Glen is a very experienced agricultural engineer and we would like to think that he will receive the support of the villages and obtain some new business.  Glen's contact details can be found on the Businesses tab of this website.  Thanks Glen.
