There are a number of walks
in and around Chilton which are all very clearly marked with good
signage and excellent paths. A large number of dog walkers use the
foot paths regularly all year round.
Remember that most of the land you walk on borders farm fields
so please keep your dogs under control. There is a dog litter bin
on the approach to the Church.
For a starter try the circular walk outlined in the map (SG01-1)
provided. Start at the approach to St. Mary's.
You can either walk in a clockwise direction or if you feel
rebellious start anti-clockwise.
If the short circular walk is not enough for you then extend
this by heading towards Shawlands Retail Park. This will bring you
out at the KFC roundabout. Follow Northern Rd back up the
industrial estate then turn into Milner Rd. Follow past Buildbase
and head up hill past Travis Perkins back to the start.
You can also extend your walk past Chilton Hall . The hall,
previously home to the grandmother of Robert
Walpole (the first
Prime Minister of Great Britain), is today home to
Lord Hart of Chilton. Continue onward to the end of the drive
and onwards across the B1115 to Chilton Airfield following map
SG02-1
During World War II
an airfield was built largely within the parish. Initially called
Airfield 174, it was later renamed RAF Sudbury. It
was completed in 1943 and handed over to the
USAAF
on 23 March 1944. With three runways, the airfield was home to the
USAAF 486th Bomber Group.
The walk continues around the airfield or cutting through, along
any of the paths back to your starting point.
Prior to arriving at the airfield why not pay a visit to the tree
nursery and "Woodland B.A.T.S project. This can be found at the end
of "The Grove"
