Eye Arts Club - The club
provides arts club sessions for children at the
Dove Hall, Dove Lane, Eye on seven
Saturday mornings of each term from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. There is a
finale performance for family and friends on the last session in
each term at 1 p.m. The club was originally set up to provide
leisure activities in a rural area for children with disabilities
but now includes children of all abilities, both special needs and
able-bodied. The sessions are run by Liz
Waugh McManus of Obelon Art and Puppetry Company and Caroline
Mummery, a professional dancer, both of whom are CRB checked
and are experienced working with children of all abilities.
The club has a project each term and the children paint, draw,
print, make masks and puppets, use photography, dance, enjoy music
and movement, have fun and make new friends, with the help and
guidance of Liz, Caroline and volunteer helpers.
We would like to hear from anyone who would like to join us, and we
also welcome volunteers and committee members to help us run this
unique children's art club. The cost is £24.50 per child per term
(seven sessions), or £32.50 for two or more children from the same
family.
For more details you can look at our website :

Alternatively, you can contact Liz on 01379 668464 or Pat

Eye Growing Local Project : Eye Millfields
Allotments
Background
Many people in Eye now want to grow their own vegetables, fruit
and herbs. The main aim of our project is to encourage and support
anyone wanting to get started and make a success of it. They may be
novices wanting to grow fresh salads, or keen growers aspiring to
become self sufficient in home grown produce. We aim to offer
practical help and advice on what to grow and when to grow it, and
provide tools, seed sharing, plants and compost.
Grow Your Own scheme
Situated in the heart of Eye on the Millfields allotment site,
the initial project is focussed on a Grow Your Own scheme, inspired
by the Sustainable Living Initiative at Bluebell South allotments
in Norwich. Under this scheme a large allotment plot is divided
into mini plots of varying sizes depending on need and experience
of individual growers.
The Eye project aims to support around 16-20 growers cultivating
4 standard size plots divided into mini plots of 5m by 1.5m. The
site is designed with community areas such as sheds, greenhouse,
seating area, fruit bushes and compost bins which will be added as
the project progresses. Membership is open to any person normally
eligible to apply for allotment space in Eye. As a not-for-profit
organisation members are asked to pay a membership contribution to
the project. Members receive 1 plot, shared tools, some seeds and
plants, compost as available and practical advice. Members have the
option to take additional plots as they need them. All
contributions are put back into the project, to pay for shared
elements such as seeds, compost, plants etc.
Each person grows the fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers of
their choice, with experienced growers encouraged to support new
growers. It is the responsibility of each plot holder to maintain
their plot and paths in reasonable condition. We will use
environmentally friendly methods of cultivation and avoid the use
of insecticides, pesticides, and chemical fertiliser.
Depending on the success of the initial Grow your Own project,
we hope to develop a range of schemes within the project
including:
· Volunteering: - This is aimed at people interested in growing
who are unable to commit to regular time. Opportunities will arise
for helping with plot clearing, sowing, potting, weeding and
harvesting. Volunteers can learn basic gardening skills, meet other
growers and get fresh local produce.
· A project nursery: - to develop a greenhouse or small
polytunnel for growing our own plants for our allotments.
· Social events: - gardening talks, shared picnics, seed
swapping, garden visits etc.
· A Grow Your Own project in partnership with students, parents
and tutors at Hartismere High School in Eye, supporting them to
grow vegetables and fruit.
A small steering group of volunteers has been formed to develop
the project and Eye Town Council is very supportive of the project.
To date 16 people have joined as members, and 2 people are
volunteering.
New members
welcome!
