A Tourist's Eye

Dominated by its somewhat controversial Victorian flint and brick Town Hall commissioned in 1857 by E B Lamb, the town of Eye is considered by its inhabitants to be more like a village, although recent growth in population may see a step change in the town’s future development.

Nonetheless it still remains a place of historical and architectural interest. It even boasts a castle keep built on the site of the Eye Castle which possibly dates back to the eleventh Century.

Eye Church & Guild HallThe magnificent fifteenth century Church of St Peter and St Paul is featured in the Churches and Chapels section of “Days Out in Suffolk” available from Mid Suffolk Tourist Information Centre.

Just beside the Church is the Guild Hall which again dates back to the 1400’s. The Guild’s activities could still be said to be alive represented by enthusiastic members of Eye Arts Guild www.eyeartsguild.com.

The town is twinned with Pouzauges in France (see the Twinning page) and this promotes links to continental tourism. There is no official Tourist Office in Eye, although Partridge and Lucas the local Estate Agent keeps an array of leaflets which are available to tourists which include: “Heart of Suffolk Treasures”, and the “Eye Cycle Route” (reprinting 10/06 and will be available in 12/06), “Eye Town Trail” gives a detailed map of the heart of Eye with places of interest clearly marked.

There is a ‘watering hole’ at the Queens Head, (01379 870153) the last remaining pub out of some 15 only a few decades ago.

Excellent cuisine is served at Lindsay House Restaurant (01379 870122), and a choice of Peking or Cantonese at “Lee’s Cottage” (01379 870822) as well as a teashop in Church Street.

For those intrepid travellers wishing to stay overnight for further explorations the Bull Auberge (01379 783604) in nearby Yaxley offers excellent food and accommodation, or indeed you can search the Accommodation Page.

If it’s a picnic you want, then nothing could be better than to spend a restful afternoon at the Pennings (turn immediately right after the hump back bridge near the church on the B1117 to Stradbroke. Drive a little bit further along the lane after your lunch and you might be fortunate enough to soak up the atmosphere of true village cricket, where tractors may well be working the fields surrounding the ground, a reminder that this really is rural Suffolk at its very best.
