The joint Church/Parish Meeting group “Friends of Burgh Schoolroom”
(FOBS) applied in February,2009, for planning permission to extend
the old schoolroom beside the church to make it into a proper
community resource with disabled access, toilet facilities and
kitchen. This was granted in October, 2009. The next
stage of plans has been approved and the work has now
been put out to tender, a builder has been selected
and, now that we have detailed quotations, grants will be
sought. We have gained Scheduled Ancient Monument
permission for work on this site and been granted a Faculty from
the Diocesan Advisory Council for those parts of the project that
lie within the churchyard. We have obtained Grants from SCDC,
the Wood Trust and the Andrew Lloyd Webber foundation's
Architectural Heritage Fund. It is hoped that work will
start very soon, waether permitting.
The extension will just fit in the space between the schoolroom and
the neighbouring field and will replace the rundown, unused yard
and outside ‘elsan’ privy.
The only obvious change from the roadside will be the addition of a
roof above the existing wall of the yard.
The proposed (tiny!) kitchen and unisex toilet with disabled access
and facilities will use the area of the existing yard and chemical
toilet.
The development plans to:
- be in sympathy with the existing building with a slate roof and
flint clad wall
- meet the needs of the whole community with access over a firm
slope (no steps) and a toilet for the
disabled
