The Parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, built on the
site of an earlier church, has workmanship dating from circa
1320. The church is particularly noted for the beautiful carving on
the ends of the medieval benches and for the Passion bench. The
roof is supported by one of Suffolk’s famous single hammer beam
structures.
In the south aisle is a portrait of Archbishop Sancroft,
Fressingfield’s most famous son. He was Master of Emmanuel College,
Cambridge, Dean of Saint Paul’s and was responsible for its
rebuilding after the Great Fire of London and was occupant of the
Tower of London for his views. His tomb is in the churchyard of the
village he loved and where he spent his retirement. The lovely
church is full of light and is of architectural and historic
interest. It is the meeting place of one small part of the
worldwide company of Christian believers. Week by week young and
old gather to sing God’s praises, to learn more about Him and to
bring to Him in prayer their own needs and the needs of others near
and far.
The building, by its noble design and commanding position,
dominates the village, bearing witness of our God, so the church
members endeavour, with His help, to bear witness in the local
community to His laws and to His love and power.
We warmly invite you to join with us to share in the wonder of
worshipping God and experiencing the joy of fellowship with His
people in this living church. The church is open every day during
daylight hours.
A comprehensive Guide and History of the Church of Saint Peter
and Saint Paul is available for visitors.
