Claydon And Whitton Parish Council

Parish Meetings

The venue and agenda for all our meetings are always advertised on the Parish Council Notice Boards. Since the closure of the Old Chapel in Station Road we sometimes have difficulty in finding a meeting room for our Planning and Finance meetings. We are doing our very best to rectify this situation but obviously if local organizations have already booked then we have to look elsewhere.

The next Full Council Meeting is on Monday 8th March 2010 at 7:30pm in Claydon and Barham Village Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend and raise any matters of concern to them at the public forum.

Two vacancies exist on the council and if you would like to apply click here for more information.

Claydon Parish Council welcome a new Councillor

On Monday 16th November John Whitehead of Hereford Drive was co-opted onto Claydon Parish Council. We still have one vacancy to fill, if you are 18 or over please see the Parish Council notice board, or here, for details of how to apply and put your name forward for this position.

The Planning and Amenities Committee

The planning committee works within the parish council and is made up of members with an elected chairperson and vice chair. We review planning applications that are applicable to our parish and those in neighbouring parishes, which could have an effect on our village and are able to make recommendations to Mid Suffolk District Council who have to make the final decision.

Dates times and agenda of all our meetings are always posted on the village notice boards. These meetings are open to the general public and during the open forum session comments can be made to the committee on a particular application or on any item on the agenda. If a member of the public wishes to make an objection or approval on a particular application then they may write direct to the chief planning officer at Mid Suffolk District Council explaining their reasons for support or objection.

Should sufficient objections be received including those from the Parish Council then the application will be taken to the District Council Planning Committee, and not decided by the case officer alone. The parish planning committee also deals with other issues which affect the Parish, and the agenda often includes issues such as street cleaning, litter bins, parking in the village, street lighting and highway matters. Members of the public who have comments on these items can contact a member of the Parish Council or by writing to our clerk Suzanne Eagle.

Recent government changes to planning requirements now means that certain alterations and extensions no longer require planning permission, if in doubt always check with Mid Suffolk Planning Department who are pleased to advise, they can also offer pre-application advice if required.

HGV ban through Claydon.

For several years we have been asking Suffolk County Council Highways to correct their oversight and complete the HGV ban in our community to protect the routes to our Schools. We have, at long last, had some success Suffolk County Council proposes to increase the HGV ban along the entire length of Claydon Church Lane. However their plan allow HGV's to travel from Barham Church Lane into Thomhill Road to Edinburgh Gardens where they will have to turn right into Bacon Road then back to Barham Church Lane. Claydon and Whitton Parish Council had requested that the banned area protect the whole of the 3 estates in Claydon and Barham; it appears that the only extra cost to do so would be one set of illuminated traffic signs. This means that the routes to Claydon Primary School are not protected from HGV traffic; please contact your Suffolk County Councilor (John Field 831306) or the Parish Council if you wish to comment.

Sustainable Communities Act Amendment Bill

Please lobby your MP for support.   In December 2009 the Sustainable Communities Act Amendment Bill was introduced into Parliament and Alistair Burt MP has agreed to adopt it as his Private Members' Bill.   He was particularly impressed with new powers for Parish and Town Councils contained in the Bill.   Since then over 260 MP's have already signed Early Day Motion 143 in support of the Bill and negotiations with government ministers and officials have so far been constructive.   However, there is a very tight time frame with the election due in May.   More MP's are required to sign up and urge the government to give the Bill the Parliamentary time it needs to become law.   The Bill's second reading is set for Friday 26 February and government support is needed by then.

Action:  Help is crucial to seeing this Bill made law, so please do the following by Friday 12 February:
1. Write or email your MP.  You can find out who your MP is and their contact details at http://findyourmp.parliament.uk
Sample letter - I am writing to you regarding the Sustainable Communities Act Amendment Bill.  This Bill will help strengthen the original Act by making the process ongoing, and so further involve people in decision making.   I therefore ask that you:
1. Please sign EDM 143 in support of the Bill, if you have not already, 2. Please urge the relevant Government Ministers to support this Bill and, if required, agree to give the Bill extra time or speed up the procedure to ensure it becomes law in this Parliamentary Session.

More information on the Bill can be found at www.localworks.org.
