One of the most
thriving activities in the village, the Hargrave Carpet Bowls Club
was founded in 1988 and quickly became the focal point of village
sporting life. Those that attended enjoyed the camaraderie of
learning a completely new game, in the knowledge that having a bit
of fun was more important than winning. The club welcomes new
members and can be found in the Village Hall on any Tuesday
evening.
Never a large
club, and only with a maximum of twenty or so members, the club
joined the Bury Carpet Bowls League (B.C.B.L.) in 1990. After
a couple of barren years, success followed in 1992 when the club
won the Ousden Triples. In the two seasons that followed, the club
was Runner Up in the same competition. Unfortunately, the club
could not keep this run going and the next success was in 1996,
when one member was Runner Up in the B.C.B.L.Pairs
competition. In the following season, the club were
successful in the B.C.B.L.Fours competition.
The 1998/1999
season has been the most successful to date, the team managing not
only to win the League but also finishing Runner Up in the Knockout
Cup. The elusive ‘double’ only being missed by one shot
!
During the whole
of the club’s existence, members have left but have been replaced
by new players, some from other villages. It is this mix of
talents and ages that over the last season has proved that the club
can compete to the highest level and still retain the jovial
atmosphere, of what many regard as the friendliest club in the
league.
It is with
building excitement that the club looks forward to what future
seasons may bring, and who knows, the club may soon be celebrating
a Treble like Manchester United !!
