In 1917 the Davies Memorial Hall was opened.
In 1946 the Herringswell Village
Trust was formed. The hall was donated to Herringswell Parishioners
for social and recreational use, and the land was transferred into
Parish ownership as a result of a swap for Herringswell Poors'
Fen land. The Live and Let Live Club ran a members club from
the Village Hall since the 1960’s and during the 1970’s villagers
got together to build an extension as a further piece of land was
gifted to the Village.
Since the mid 1970’s up until
October 2007 the Live and Let Live Club operated a members
social/drinking club. However, for about 5 years they had been
making heavy financial losses and approached the Parish Council for
assistance. It was then discovered that the Village Hall Charity
had been used by the Live and Let Live Club illegally and steps
were taken to resolve the issues. A meeting of Herringswell
Parishioners was held in May 2007 to elect a Village Hall
Committee. The Club committee chose not to co-operate and refused
to hand over a full set of keys. As the Charities Commission had
given strict instructions for the matter to be regularised, we gave
them notice to leave the premises.
The Live and Let Live Club Committee
had broken their position as Trustees in not maintaining the
building. Fortunately, we had taken back possession of the building
before any further damage could be caused and we are currently
attempting to raise finance to refurbish the building both inside
and outside.
In November 2007 the old Central
Heating broke down irrepairably. We approached Forest Heath
District Council and explained to them that we had been left
without funds and they agreed to advance a sum of money to pay for
a new boiler. This is being actioned and, once all the quotes are
in for the extensive works, we will be putting together a plan.
Fund raising is progressing well and in June 2008 we were awarded
£10,000 from the Suffolk Environmental Trust (SET). You can
follow fund raising progress on the Calendar page.
