FRIENDS
of
ST. PETER’S
Objectives
The 14th / 15th Century Church of St. Peter’s stands on a high
point, affording a magnificent view of the River Orwell and its
estuary. At one time a very early settlement existed on this
site. Next to the church are two later but old thatched
buildings; one of these is the renowned Ship Inn. This
enclave is the oldest part of the village.
The Friends of St. Peter’s was formed in 1998 and its objectives
are the preservation of the fabric of the church and the
maintenance of the churchyard for the benefit of everyone in the
village, both now and in the future. Current membership
comprises some 190. (The population of Levington is 212.)
Although we need financial help with the larger projects, more
importantly we are able to benefit from much ‘self help’.
This use of village skills and talents has brought together very
many in our community in a most practical and rewarding way.
Everyone who donates and / or gives practical help becomes a
friend of St. Peter’s and receives an annual statement of the
fabric accounts, together with a copy of the Chairman’s Report,
summarising the work carried out in any one year. A committee
comprising village as well as church nominees administers the
affairs of the Friends.
The AGM is well attended. After the formal business, some 50 to
60 members are entertained by a speaker and afterwards refreshments
are provided by the committee, by way of saying ‘thank you’.
Animated conversation goes on well into the night!
The church is open daily; do come and share with us this
wonderful place.

During the growing season a rota operates, allowing the grass to be
cut and the churchyard to be kept in good order.
We also have working parties in the Spring and Autumn to
undertake more major maintenance. Apart from coffee and biscuits, a
visit to the next door Ship Inn provides for many, a fitting end to
an enjoyable morning.
