We would not have Magical Musical
Moments, if it were not for Harry Crick, an unassuming
Offtonian bachelor.
Born in 1924, Harry was a well-known figure in Offton who
never moved away from his village. After his death in 1999 his will
revealed a handsome bequest to the church, in which he had
worshipped all his life.
Offton Church is a much loved building, but as with many such
structures it lacked basic facilities. If water was needed you had
to bring it with you!
After Harry's legacy was received, the PCC decided that a
kitchen and facilities would create new opportunities to enhance
village life. Work to be
done!
With current laws requiring provisions for the disabled, these
were incorporated in a design sympathetic to the fabric. The cost,
however, turned out to be immense and it quickly transpired that
Harry's considerable sum of money would not reach that far. The
wish to pursue the project prompted an appeal for more funds, which
resulted in many giving generously.
Work to the Grade I listed building was completed in spring
2003 rendering the ancient building ready for new challenges.
The extension is affectionately called Harry's Room.
Offton Church with its brass chandeliers and candelabra makes a
splendid venue for Magical Musical Moments Concerts by
Candlelight.
