PRESS RELEASE SIZEWELL PARISHES LIAISON GROUP

The Group was formed in May by 24 Parish & Town Councils that surround the nuclear EDF Sizewell New Build Site. The Group is not committing its participating Councils to an acceptance of New Build but rather getting the best for our communities should nuclear expansion take place.

The Aim of the Constitution is to act as a co-ordinating Group-“To encourage investment by EDF and government in the local infrastructure.”

The Objectives of the Group include the following infrastructure concerns -Transport (Road, Rail & Sea); Education & Training; Health & Social Welfare; Housing & Leisure; Security & Conservation; and Preservation of a Rural Identity.

A Social Contract- The Group recognise that with the impending expansion of the nuclear industry at Sizewell, an agreed social and economic contract is now required between the local community, the nuclear industry and specific government departments. Current Government policy is to expand urgently the nuclear power programme and EDF will ultimately profit from the sale of generated electricity. Therefore, a binding contract can ensure funding is provided from several sources to support local infrastructure needs. The Group believe commitment and co-operation is essential at this time to enable the community and its citizens to benefit from improved public, environmental and cultural facilities.
