Hints and Tips

If you have any fishing Hints or Tips that might help a fellow club member or visitor to this site please send them to keith_wink@hotmail.com and we'll publish them here.

Ledgering for Roach
When getting typical fast roach bites on the tip don't sit there thinking you'll hit the next time it goes. Strike anyway. You will find that more often than not you will still connect as the fish is sitting with the bait in its mouth.

Fishing Casters
The ideal hook size is an 18 which should pierce the blunt end of the caster and be positioned so that the point of the hook just protrudes out of the shell. Never try to use double caster on such a small hook, step up to a 16. If you don’t do this it will spin on the retrieve twisting the line. As well as sorting out the better fish, Caster tends to work better in clearer water as it is seen easier than maggot.

Line Twist
If your hook length becomes twisted do not be tempted to pull the twist out. Hold the line at one end and let it untwist naturally or else it will kink the line.

Waggler fishing at Beccles
Once set up, keep adjusting the bottom shot noting the amount of bites you are getting. The aim is to get it as close as possible to the hook to improve presentation and the number of visible bites.
Always fish overdepth and as the water level drops, rather than move the position of the float, simply move the bottom shot up the line. When casting a waggler always use a smooth cast and just before the float hits the water, draw the tip of the rod up. This straightens the line to the float and reduces tangles.
