Why Give Blood
The need to collect blood is constant in order to supply
hospitals with the tools needed to help save lives. The National
Blood Service needs to collect 8,000 donations every day to keep up
with the demand from hospital. That works out as roughly 2.1
million donations a year. Despite this need for blood, only 5% of
the eligible people actually donate.
There is no substitute for blood, and it does have a shelf life.
Red Cells will last only 35 days, with Platelets lasting 5 days. If
we stopped collecting blood tomorrow, then hospitals would come to
a standstill within 7 days. This is why giving blood is so
important.
