Needham Market is situated in central Suffolk, eight miles North-West of Ipswich. It is built on the western bank of the river Gipping, which runs south-eastward from here to Ipswich where it forms the Orwell Estuary.

The road through Needham Market from Ipswich to Bury St Edmunds was turnpiked by the Ipswich to Scole trust in 1711, whilst the same route was followed by the Eastern Union Railway with its line from Ipswich to Stowmarket and thence to Bury or Norwich, in 1846
