Exploring the Felixstowe coast will yield artistic delights this weekend as it plays host to Felixstroll, two days of music, visual art, talks, tours, theatre and interactive displays to suit residents and visitors of all ages.

This busy weekend of creative activity is being held on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 July, and events will take place along the route of a proposed Coastal Path leading from Landguard Point to Felixstowe Ferry.

“See the town you thought you knew well from a different perspective by joining in the fun at Felixstroll, a unique celebration that will bring artists and the local community together to enjoy a new take on Felixstowe’s heritage and coastline,” said Cllr Mary Neale, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Countryside.

“With so much to see and do, Felixstroll participants will find it a challenge to fit everything in, which is why a map and programme of events is available from Felixstowe Tourist Information Centre (TIC) and on the Suffolk Coastal website to help people get the best out of their weekend,” added Cllr Neale.

Waymarks based on sea birds, designed by the artist Elizabeth-Jane Grose in preparation for the new Coastal Path, will also help people stay on track as they make their way along the five-mile stretch of coast.

“The Mad Hutters’ Tea party is just one of the must-see events on offer. Forty beach hut owners from Manors End to Clifflands are dressing up and decorating their huts in the style of Alice in Wonderland, serving tea and cakes from 1.30pm to 4pm on Sunday, June 5. They will be collecting donations for the British Heart Foundation’s aptly-named Queen of Hearts campaign at the same time,” added Cllr Neale.

Pick up a list of the beach huts taking part at Felixstowe TIC, where visitors can vote for their favourite hut by giving in their nomination forms before 4pm on Sunday.

“It would also be a shame to miss Surf and Turf, a performance of words and music devised by the world-famous London Sinfonietta, music workshop leader Fraser Trainer and poet Dean Parkin, in collaboration with students from Orwell and Deben High School and Colneis Junior School,” added Cllr Neale.

The piece was inspired by Felixstowe’s coast and will be premiered at Landguard Fort on Saturday, July 4 from 4.30pm. Tickets are free for under-16s and £3 for adults, and can be bought on the door or from Felixstowe TIC and Landguard Fort in advance. Before the concert, the Sinfonietta will give people a flavour of what is to come with a series of impromptu performances along the prom from 3pm.

“Finally, on Sunday, July 5, the Grand Theatre of Lemmings will be bringing their hilarious brand of street theatre to Felixstowe seafront from 11am to 3pm, perfect for anyone keen to be entertained by bouncing bunnies and a cod choir.

“Of course, these recommendations are just a sample of the diverse and exciting activities taking place at Felixstroll, and I would encourage residents and tourists to let themselves be drawn to Felixstowe this weekend to experience what’s on offer for themselves,” added Cllr Neale.
