Residents hoping to pop in for a swim at Leiston Leisure Centre
are being advised to try one of the district’s other pools because
a gas supply problem means that the pools at Leiston will be closed
from 5.30pm today (Tuesday).
Specialist contractors have been called into put right the
problem with the gas pipe but it currently seems likely that the
pools will be out of action until Saturday at the earliest.
“Without gas, we cannot keep the pool water temperature up to
the level our swimmers normally enjoy, and so we are closing the
pool from tonight, although the rest of the centre will be open to
business,” said Simon Tappenden, local manager for DC Leisure who
run the Council’s sports centres.
“We will get everything back to normal as quickly as possible,
but have to rely on the experts on this one, and the first
indications are that it could take three days to put it right.
“We are sorry for any disappointment or inconvenience this may
cause, but I would remind people that we have alternative pools on
offer at Woodbridge, as well as Felixstowe. Anyone who is missing
out on a pre-booked swimming session will of course be offered an
alternative or a refund,” added Mr Tappenden.
It is not just the 25 metre pool and its neighbouring toddler
pool that is affected. The steam room and sauna will also be
closed, and while the sports hall will still be open, there will be
no hot water or heating on offer.
