A stretch of the promenade around the Felixstowe Sea Road area will be closed today (Monday) following the discovery of a suspected Second World War bomb on the shore which is believed to have been blown onto the beach following rough seas over the weekend.

A stretch of the promenade around the Felixstowe Sea Road area will be closed today (Monday) following the discovery of a suspected Second World War bomb on the shore which is believed to have been blown onto the beach following rough seas over the weekend.

The bomb is 40 metres off the prom and a 50 metre exclusion zone around it has been ordered by the police, who are currently managing the incident, meaning that a cordoned-off stretch of the promenade has been closed. None of the seafront gardens or other amenities are affected.

A Royal Navy bomb disposal squad from Portsmouth is on its way to the site but will have to wait until low tide after they arrive to deal with it and therefore the prom will be closed all day.

All work on the £10 million coastal defence scheme for south Felixstowe has of course been temporarily suspended. Anyone wanting further details on the coastal defence project should contact the Environment Agency's project manager, Andrew Rouse, on 01733 464 246.
