Suffolk Coastal is looking for sporty youngsters to represent their district at the county’s own festival of sport - the Suffolk Youth Games which is being held in Ipswich on Sunday, July 6.

Special training and selection sessions organised by Suffolk Coastal’s Active Communities team are open to anyone wanting to take part in the Suffolk Youth Games.  The training courses for each sport will develop individual skills in the weeks leading up to the Games, with each course costing £10 or £8 for concessions.

“The Suffolk Youth Games have proved hugely popular since the starting gun was first fired nine years ago with around 1,000 young people taking part last year. It really has become our very own mini-Olympics and with the London 2012 now only four years away, this year’s event could be a stepping stone for one of our budding youngsters,” said Cllr Mary Neale, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Countryside.

“This is a fantastic chance for girls and boys who enjoy taking part in sport to take advantage of the training offered in the weeks leading up to the event and then to compete with other young people from across the county in this fun event,” added Cllr Neale.

This year's games will feature nine competitive sports – athletics, badminton, basketball, girls cricket, football, hockey, table tennis, tag rugby and tennis. The athletics competition includes events for young people with disabilities.

The games attract hundreds of competitors aged 10 to 16 from across the county and the call has gone out to young people in school year 11 or below who would like to be part of Team Suffolk Coastal and represent their district.

This festival of sport, sponsored by Redrow Homes, is a guaranteed great day out for those competing and watching and there is the opportunity to try out a range of demonstration sports.
