More than 1,800 motorists were caught speeding in Suffolk during
a week-long campaign in the county between Monday 21 and Sunday 27
April.
Despite publicity about the campaign, 1484 people were caught by
police officers and Suffolk Safety Camera Partnership cameras and a
further 364 were caught by fixed cameras in the county.
Sgt Steve Knight, from Suffolk’s Roads Policing Unit, said the aim
was to help make roads in the county safer for drivers, cyclists
and pedestrians.
“Motorists really have no excuse. The campaign was well-publicised
and there still seems to be a significant number of drivers who
have failed to grasp the concept that speed kills.
“We are aware that there are those who say police should have
better things to do, but this ignores the role speed plays in fatal
and serious road traffic collisions. There is nothing more
important than the preservation of life and by targeting speeders
we hope we can save lives.
“While police concentrated their efforts during the campaign
period, this did not mean other duties were neglected, and we will
continue to try to get the message across by targeting those who
speed.”
In a similar campaign last year, between Monday 23 and Sunday 29
April, 954 motorists were caught speeding by officers and
cameras.
