We cannot promise wonders behind
platform 9¾ but we can promise an exciting potions class, where you
can learn to make potions that will make roots grow on plants, and
another that will make leaves grow, and another that will make
flowers even bigger and brighter.
We can also offer a miracle class where seeds like dust grow into
beautiful pot plants.
This is a club for boys and girls aged between 7 and 12 years old
to learn all about horticulture (that's a posh name for gardening!)
There is no charge for youngsters joining. We meet at 5.45 pm
to 6.45 pm before the adult meetings, meetings are held at
St. Lukes Church, Homefield Avenue, Oulton
Broad.
You can learn to take cuttings (with a scalpel like surgeons use)
of many different types of plants. We might grow a giant pumpkin
that you can't lift, or a two metre walking stick, decorate clay
pots, make wooden plant holders, plant some bulbs around the
church, learn about flower arranging, we can perhaps make a table
decoration for Christmas. Grow some herbs that taste like sugar,
or even the Mexican toothache plant, chew one leaf and your
tongue goes numb!
The Oulton Broad and Lowestoft Horticultural Society has been going
for over 90 years and there is always someone that will be able to
help if you have any questions. Just think, if you plant a tree
now, when you retire it could be 20 metres tall, and if just one
pair of birds nest in your tree and have six chicks each year,
you could have given a home to over 300 birds, how about that
then!
We can learn about growing vegetables, peas, beans, carrots, who
can grow the longest runner bean; we will give you the seeds to
have a go. The Society have two Flower and Vegetable shows each
year where we can have a display to show what Young Gardeners can
do.
The Society have a competition each year to see who can grow the
"World's Largest Dahlia". We could have a go to see if we can beat
the adults.
No previous experience of gardening is required, Mum and Dad don't
have to be members of the Society, they don't even have to like
gardening, but it helps.
