Polstead Community Shop was
the first community shop in Suffolk, and is the fourth oldest
in England. It is sited next to Polstead Village Hall, on the Green
in the centre of Polstead. It is non-profit-making, and run by a
team of two to three dozen volunteers. It is owned by the village
it serves.
The Post Office, run by Sue
Peck and her helpers, has been situated in the Shop since 1999. It
and the Shop are open every morning from Monday to Saturday.
The Shop is also open for two afternoons a week. The opening hours
are:
Monday-Friday 9.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m.
Saturday 9.00 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.
Monday afternoons (Shop only) 2 – 4.30 p.m.
Friday afternoons (Shop only) 2.30 – 4.30 p.m.
The
Shop sells a wide
variety of groceries and household goods, bread from Lavenham,
Suffolk ham and bacon, free-range eggs, milk and dairy
products, tins and dry goods, chocolates and confectionery,
frozen food including Myatt’s Suffolk ice cream, Musks of
Newmarket's famous sausages, meat from the Jolly Meat Co.
of Hadleigh, fresh vegetables and fruit (some from Polstead),
home-made jams, marmalades, cakes and chutneys, Polstead-made
candles, local honey, drawings, stationery, crafts and
handmade cards. We do not sell cigarettes or alcohol, but we
do sell Polstead tea towels and shopping bags, kindling wood,
greetings cards of all sorts and picture postcards of
Polstead.
Have you tried the popular Discovery,
Cox & Bramley and Russet Apple Juices from Willow
Farm, Polstead? Delicious local apple juices made from Polstead
apples, available from the Community Shop at £2.65 a litre
bottle.
Sainsbury’s
Delivery The Community Shop has a weekly
delivery of selected stock from Sainsbury’s. Customers who would
like to order any particular items for delivery on a
Tuesday are invited and encouraged to leave their
order at the Shop no later than Saturday at 12
noon. Their items will be added to the Shop’s order and customers
should collect their order from the Shop during normal opening
hours. A small delivery charge will be added to Sainsbury’s retail
price.

Light Bulbs!

Energy Saving Light
Bulbs are good for the environment. They last up to 10 times longer
than ordinary bulbs, use up to 70% less energy and have a low heat
output. Our low-energy light bulbs will last for up to 10,000
hours!

We have a great
selection in the Community Shop at competitive prices. In stock are
11 watt (= 60 watt), 15 watt (= 75 watt) and 20 watt (= 100 watt)
bulbs of many different shapes and kinds. (To work out the rough
wattage of the new bulbs that you need, divide the old wattage by
5.)
- Disposal: In several years’ time, please bring your old
low-energy light bulbs back to the Shop when they have worn out and
we will dispose of them!
