contact The parish council meets in the village hall at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of January, March, May, July, September and November and brief reports appear regularly in Village Voice, the magazine serving the parishes of Hoxne, Wingfield, Denham and Syleham. There are currently six councillors.   The chairman is Mr Malcolm Flounders  and the clerk, from whom further information can be obtained, is Mrs Linda Bruce pc@syleham.suffolk.gov.uk or 01379 669018.

Mid Suffolk District Council core strategy for local development has now been confirmed and Syleham is designated 'Countryside', which means that housing development would be permitted only in strictly limited categories.

The Parish Council takes a strong interest in elderly and vulnerable residents and has an active link with Age Concern in Mrs Elsden.

The  Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator (Mr G Lewis) can be contacted via the parish clerk, as above, who will also be able to tell you the contact for your particular area.

County Councillor Guy McGregor, District Councillor Elizabeth Gibson-Harries and local Police Officer Tim Green or Community Support Officer Steven Long frequently attend parish council meetings to keep councillors up to date.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 11th January 2012 at 7.30pm.

Recent Issues

Syleham's Parish Plan has now been published and copies  distributed to all households.  The steering group arranged a drop-in coffee morning, with information and activities, to encourage the setting up of small action groups to take forward some of the issues raised; this event was well attended and some new voluntary groups are being formed.

Among the issues for early investigation were a re-cycling site, a group oil-purchasing scheme and a footpath survey.

Re-cycling site   It was agreed that a mixed glass bottle bank would be the most useful and the Village Hall was the obvious site. The Management Committee has now installed this facility and is happy for local residents to use it provided they exercise care and consideration for near neighbours.

Oil Purchasing Scheme
Wortwell & Mendham Bulk Buying Community Oil Group, a large group already serving the Waveney Valley, is happy to receive enquiries from Syleham residents.  Orders are placed monthly during winter months.  Contact

Footpath Survey   The Parish Council is most grateful to two volunteers who undertook a footpath survey.  Only minor problems were reported and a parish councillor has visited the landowners concerned.  On the suggestion of the volunteers, a copy of a simple footpath map for the parish has been distributed to all residents.

Household Waste
The household waste site at Brome has closed as a County Council site but will re-open on 5th September as Brome and Oakley Community Recycling Centre.  There will be a charge for landfill items but a wide range of items will be accepted free of charge.  Opening hours:  9am - 5pm Monday to Saturday, 10am - 4pm Sunday and Bank Holidays.  For more information www.boltonbros.co.uk

Hydro-electricity
There is still the possibility of a feasibility study on the generation of elelctricity from the weir at the old watermill but it needs keen local volunteers.  Watch this space - and why not offer support?

Older Issues

A review of some of the road names within the parish was undertaken a year or so ago, to try to correct some anomalies; unfortunately, the parish council was wrongly advised on the procedure to be undertaken and this issue was dropped. The opportunity to acquire the red telephone kiosk was  discussed but, as only one resident expressed a desire to retain the kiosk,  it was decided not to undertake the responsibility of maintaining it.

Planning Issues

The Parish Council was invited to comment on the proposed wind turbines at Eye Airfield. The proposal was publicised but no comments were raised by residents. There are two current applications 1603/11 and 1604/11, both relating to Syleham House and both awaiting decisions.
