ORIGINS
The Saxon Theod-beorhtes-tun or Tibert’s Farm became Norman
Thewardetuna. The Domesday Book shows it to be held by Hubert under
Robert Malet.
The East Bridge dam crossed the river Min flowing into
Myssemeare where in 1182 under Henry II, Sir Ranulph de Glanvil,
(who died crusading with Richard the Lionheart at Acre) founded the
Abbey of St. Mary de Insula whose remains still stand in the
marsh.

At last
!!..the new Theberton Village sign on the corner of Pretty
Road.
After years of
fundraising, organizing, hoping and waiting..here it is !
Many thanks to all the Parish Council for their efforts, especially
Clive Brown and Clerk Joan Harvey for hours of hard work, extorting
money, visiting the forge etc.
All that time has been well-spent, as you can see. Thanks also
to Phil Baskett and family for collecting, preparing and
erecting the sign.
Very special thanks to Graham Chaplin of Ironoak
Forge,Buxhall for his skill and artistry in producing this
beautiful sign..you can see why this award-winning blacksmith has
been given the Bronze Medal by the Worshipful Company of
Blacksmiths [their ancient guild].

[Thanks to Joan Harvey for these photos]
THEBARTON AUSTRALIA
Theberton was twinned with
Thebarton - a suburb
of Adelaide, Australia in 1983 but the link
has waned at both ends. Thebarton's history
is linked with William Light who stayed
at
Theberton Hall and went on to be Surveyor General of South
Australia and to lay out and construct the town he named
Thebarton..he was a poor speller!
