As a child my Mother was told a
story by her Grandfather of a relative – Slasher Cook (?!) who was
killed by the windmill. I can find no reference to this. Is there
any truth to this or is it an old man’s tall
tale?

Can anybody shed any light on this please

Lovely web site. Very
informative. Does anyone know the story of L C Cooke
mentioned on the War Memorial. I was fostered by Mr and Mrs
Cooke who lived in the Old Manor House. This was their only
son who was tragically killed when in the Air Force. Does
anyone also know what happened to Mr and Mrs Cooke. A lovely
couple. Have very fond memories of going to Theberton
Church and school. I remember how the pigs from Old Manor
house used to uproot the fences and trot across the road to the
Chuch.
Lovely village. Lovely people.

Thanks Pam. Can anybody PLEASE help?

9. I am trying to locate friends who lived
at Theberton Hall Farm, in the 1990s.
The phone number I had is incorrect
and I am assuming they have moved on.
Their names are Eleanor (Ellie) and Bryan Hart. They moved
to Suffolk from Kent.
They would have dogs. Ellie has a twin sister,
Lizzie.
If you can shed any light on their whereabouts I would be
so grateful.
Many thanks.
Bruna
I have put you in touch with Nat and India
Bacon at the farm , I believe the Harts still own some land there.
Does anybody else PLEASE have any ideas ? T.P.

I am descended from Baileys (maternal
side) at Theberton (Blacksmiths), I have recently purchased “The
chronicles of Theberton” which has been reprinted, you can now buy
it through Amazon @ £17.99.(see below), If anybody in Theberton can
tell me more about Thomas Bailey (1694-1759) i.e. his parents etc,
I would be most grateful, also any old photos of the Baileys in the
village would be wonderful.
Thank you

Thanks very much Barry and for telling me that this reprint
has the photos and maps T.P.

Dear webmaster,
I found that Cecilia Whittington who died December 8, 1816 was
buried in the Theberton churchyard. A table monument was erected in
her memory at the east end of the chancel in the churchyard. Does
the monument still exist? I should greatly appreciate if you could
send me a picture of it.
Cecilia (1783-1816) was a daughter of Capt. Jacob John
Whittington and his wife Harriet Smythies. Are there any other
Whittington graves at Theberton?
Thank you from the Netherlands,
Bouwe Postmus 03/10/11
I'll see what I can find...Tony

12. I am in the process of doing my family history.
Both of my great parents were born in Theberton. The family
names were
Lumpkin and Block. I have been quite successful with the
Block family,
but am stuck with the Lumpkins.
My great grandma, Anna Maria Lumpkin was born at Theberton in
1871. I
am unable to find her on any of the census, so I cannot identify
her
mother or which Lumpkin family she belongs to.
I wonder if you have a local history society in Theberton who may
be
able to help me.
Many thanks.Beverley Willis 19/10/11
I have attached a copy I made of the
Eastbridge Burial Register where there are 16 Lumpkins
mentioned
{be aware the p was often omitted!}...also see below for the
Theberton burials. Tony Preston.

Dear Sir/
While researching my family history I have discovered a name
of a possible desendant of my family.
The name in question is a John Barnes born about 1811 at
Theberton also married there around 1833 to a lady Sarah
Bedwell.
I think John worked for a agricultural implement co in
Peasenall apparently leaving Suffolk in around 1841 and made his
home in Shenstone near Lichfield selling the above equiptment to
the area
I am hoping that there may be old records of perhaps his
parents.
thank you
heres hoping

Someone was looking for
Barnes. I suggest you try Janet Barnes who's family, I think,
farmed Middelton way. Janet is a bit of a local historian. Try the
address given here

My grandfather worked as a butler in Theberton in the
early 1900's. He lived
in 3 Ivy Cottage, Theberton, where my father Frank William Simpson
was born
in March 1909, christened in April and I have now found a
christening
present of a prayer book given by Theberton Hall. Does anyone know
if there
is any information of the staff employed at the Hall around that
time, and
did Ivy Cottage belong to the Hall? We have paintings of Ivy
Cottage and
the cottage across the road, which is now much enlarged.

17.
I wonder if you could help me.
I am trying to find information on the families that lived on
Theberton (Leiston) Airfield back in the 1950's.
I have been asked to write an article about this.
Not necessarily the families themselves but ANY information
regarding the habitation of the airfields accomodation after the
USAAF and RAF had left.
If you could point me in the right direction to any official
records, that would be great, along with any other
knowledge that you or your friends may have.
My own family took refuge there for about 12 months
from mid 1952 to 1953.
I was a very young child at the time but can still remember
bits and pieces.
Any help, however small, that you can give me would be much
appreciated.
Thanks,

My name is Jane Elwood nee Hemming. My father, Frederick, is
the great nephew of Charlie and Bel Cooke. We read this post
from Pam:
"Does anyone know the story of L C Cooke
mentioned on the War Memorial. I was fostered by Mr and Mrs
Cooke who lived in the Old Manor House. This was their only
son who was tragically killed when in the Air Force. Does

Lovely village. Lovely people.
Pam R Essex 29.05.2011."
We would love to be in contact with Pam and also to read the ten
pages of info from Allan Staulkey, if this
could be arranged.
I remember Auntie Bel from the late 70s and early 80s when we
visited her in her cottage opposite the church. I also
remember her little West Highland Terrier named Sally. My
parents clearly remember visiting Uncle Charlie and Auntie Bel when
they lived in the Old Manor House. My mother remembers the
pump to draw water in the kitchen and the sloping floors in the
bedrooms.
Thank you for any info and/or help.
Jane
I have sent you Pam and llan's email
addresses plus that of James Irvine who has written a 36 page
memoir about the Cooks.....T.P.
19. Hello dear Therberton folk,
I am doing a script on the Life of William Light.I live in
outback South Australia.
I f anyone has any further information on young William the
child that would be great...anything that gives us
clues as to how he managed those years after he arrived from
Penang.
The Doughtys sound like such a lovely family, Anne and George did a
great
job raising the lad.
Perhaps this request could be put in the local paper or
mentioned by the
vicar during the sunday service.
Many thanks, Nigel Carney PO Box 33 Leigh Creek, SA 5731,
Australia.
I will do what I can Nigel...any info out
there ?
Thanks Tony, When the film goes to
production I will see if I can get over for a
visit.
The colonies was
sure full of rogues but at least Suffolk and the Doughty's were
decent and
civilised people! :
)
Cheers,
Nigel
