At present we have a major fund-raising drive, as nearly £75,000 is urgently needed to repair the thatch ridge and other vital work. All contributions and fundraising are most welcome.

Our immediate target is for £16,200 plus scaffolding etc. for the roof and ridge. This will start in October as we have roosting bats to be protected. We are about half-way towards this at present;[£9,200] so have until then to raise the rest. Please help if you can.[A cheque for £500 has come from Ecclesiastical; the Church insurers charitable arm and a kind donation from U.S. friends of villagers, who saw our appeal here].

Congratulations and many thanks to Joan Harvey for
organizing the magnificent Flower Festival in St. Peters.
The fantastic displays gave so much pleasure to so many people..see the Visitors' Book comments..as well as raising about £400 for the church. It was lovely to see so many people from the congregation, the villages and beyond come
together and work happily to produce such glorious and varied things which brought colour to St.Peters.
Again thanks to all who contributed, especially Elis and Pam.

Theberton has had a church since Saxon Times. St. Peter’s is mentioned in the Domesday Book; the present church dating to Norman times. (The lower tower, nave and part of the chancel).

The octagonal belfry was added and the chancel extended about 1300 – the rectors list (on the church wall) dates back to 1305.

In the 15th Century the south aisle, porch and new windows were added. The south aisle was rebuilt during the 1846 restoration by Rev. Charles Montagu Doughty of Theberton Hall.

The flint building with its round tower and thatched roof is a real gem. The 1470 porch contains part of Zeppelin L48 shot down at Holly Tree Farm on June 17th 1917 – a plaque to the dead crewmen is in the cemetery opposite.

In more recent times (1979) the door repair was paid for by our twin town Thebarton, Australia.

“Here is a stone to sitt upon……”

Outside the porch is a fascinating table tomb of John Fenn commemorating his father Rev. William Fenn (died 1651) who was sequestered in 1644 , driven out by Puritan Cromwellians for his loyalty to King Charles .

I have been asked for the inscription on the tomb so...

                            FASCINATING FACTS new

1. In 1555 our Vicar, John Masterman, walked to Yoxford
to see old Robert Coo martyred - burnt to death.
2. The restoration of our church door was paid for in 1979 by      our then Twin Town of Thebarton, Adelaide Australia.

                               twincomp
3. On Maunday Thursday 1445 the Abbott of Leiston,
Clement of Blythburgh , a former Vicar of our church ,burst
into the service with 20 people "arrayed in warlike manner"
and assaulted, arrested and tried to drag out the Vicar John
Doonwych but was dissuaded by parishoners - weeks later
   John resigned.
4. Sir David Frost - then living in Sweetbriar Cottage
Eastbridge - paid for a new red carpet for our church ,
before his wedding to Lynne Frederick in 1981(Peter
   Sellers' widow)
5. Rev H C Van Cooten curate in charge in 1947 would take
his harmonium out to Minsmere Sluice for some evening
   services for the cottagers there.
6. Finally, if you think Fenn was badly treated by being
driven out - just reflect, only 1 year later Goody Phillips of
Aldeburgh nearby was paid £1 "for her pains in searching
out witches", John Paine 11 shillings "for hanging 7
witches" and Mr.Hopkins (the notorious "Witchfinder
General") £2 "for finding out witches"..so perhaps our
   William was lucky !
7.Which way up is this!
