First wave of greener goods a big success

Last year, members of the Greener Ufford Group took delivery of over a 100 rolls of loft insulation as well as wall insulation, draft proofing materials, hot water cylinder jackets and waterbutt kits. The inside of the Pavillion took on a completely different look as we sorted out the materials into household piles ready for collection the following day by the 16 people who had submitted their forms for the Greener Home DIY Scheme. Little did we know that the Young Farmers were meeting there that evening, I understand they enjoyed their re-arranged space and found the sheep’s wool insulation quite comfortable.

As this was the final delivery in Suffolk Coastal area for Greener Home DIY Scheme we also assisted people from Eyke and Otley who came and collected their final items. Insulation was taken away strapped to farm, boat and box trailers and in the boots of cars and by Sunday morning it was all collected or delivered. Thanks to everyone who helped us and particularly to Christian Fig, Deborah Wargate and Kirsty Wilmot at Suffolk Coastal District Council who made it all possible and Jeremy Eyres who took on the early and unplanned delivery of insulation bales.

Although this scheme has finished in this area the advice for those who missed it is to check offers available from local suppliers and fuel companies, you may also contact Eastern Carbon Reduction Initiative.

The Greener Ufford Group is looking at different projects and is involved in the proposed allotments and the possibility of a bulk buy of Solar Panels and the management of Woodland.

What issues do YOU think we should be looking at? Do you have a few hours that you can spare to come and join us in helping to make Ufford a more sustainable community?

Event Success

The Greener Ufford event held on 22 May 2010 was an arena of information on a wide range of environmental issues from green energy sources and water harvesting to wormeries, allotments and composting. The Fruit and Nut Club was on hand to offer advice about fruit, orchards and harvesting.

With presentations going on throughout the morning on a variety of environmental issues it was a packed morning with some very interesting speakers.

Whilst all this was going on inside the younger visitors were having a practical fun session outside making bird boxes, wind spinners and bird feeders. They were also able to decorate their own paper plant pot and plant a sunflower or giant pumpkin seed.

Thank you to all those who gave their time and made the event a success. A big thank you also to Elisha, Chairman of the Ufford Youth Council, who gave up her Saturday morning to help out with the children’s activities, Ann Herrtage for the refreshments, Jane Hawthorne for co-ordinating the event, and Jeremy & Karen Eyres, David Chenery, Colin Meekings for all their support on the day.

'Small Communities making a difference'

Over 40 people turned out on 12 November 2009 to hear a range of environmental experts speak on climate change.  It was a fascinating insight into the world of renewable energy, community schemes and how we can all help in the fight against global warming.  We also had a really good response to setting up the Ufford Environmental Forum and a meeting of those who expressed an interest was held on 14 January 2010.  The Forum will look at ways that Ufford can be involved in not only global issues but also those closer to home such as allotments, a community orchard, affordable renewable energy sources and further recycling opportunities.  This list is not exclusive and will no doubt expand as time goes on.

We will endeavour to keep you posted as projects progress either by the website or if you would like an e-mail please send your details to the Parish Clerk
