This month, our village of the month is Holton St Mary, situated
just off the A12 along the A1070 to Hadleigh. Winners of the 2005
Calor Suffolk Village of the Year award.

The village has less than 200 residents but was given the award
because of its ability to get things done and the plans they had
made in case of an emergency.
Holton St Mary is well situated for visiting 'Constable Country',
the small area along the valley of the river Stour including
East Bergholt and Flatford on the Suffolk side and Dedham and
Langham on the Essex side.

Church
St Mary's Church set just off the A1070 running through Holton
St Mary can easily be missed due to its squat tower. This
15th Century tower was neglected for many centuries and rather
than rebuild it, the Victorians decided to reduce it.

Holton St Mary has also put some thought into conservation,
with areas set aside around the churchyard and also the
creation of a millennium green.

Next month we will visit Tuddenham St Mary, between Cavenham and
Mildenhall.
