Our village of the month is Levington, situated 6 miles
south east of Ipswich.
History
The remains of what was thought to be a Viking ship were found
in the mud of Levington Creek and could have been one of the fleet
of Danish ships which raided Ipswich in 991AD.
In 1817 smugglers were apprehended in Levington Creek carrying
48 tubs of spirits aboard a boat called ‘Daisy’. Levington Creek
closed to legitimate commercial sail barge traffic in the
1920s.
In 1718 the first coprolite was dug in a farmer’s yard in
Levington, which was the start of a lucrative fertiliser industry
which continued well into the 19th Century supplying thousands of
tons all around the UK.
St Peters
Church
St Peters Church stands beside the road leading to Levington
Creek, it has an unspoilt appearance and you quickly realise that
it has been well maintained and cared for. The exterior, with its
mellow brick tower and lime-washed walls, is picturesque and
inviting and the interior, with its leaning walls, has a homely
atmosphere of antiquity and of centuries of prayer and devotion –
well worth a visit.

Levington Today
Although I have lived in Suffolk all my life I had never visited
Levington before, and on this occasion I was treated to the best
weather of the year so far. On the drive down to the village I felt
like I was going into another world, the quiet streets and the
lovely gardens just made the
journey seem magical.
Although the village has no village stores there are a wide
range of activities held in the village hall and also at nearby
Nacton. Periodic litter picks of the village are well attended and
it just shows how everyone is proud of their community and I
understand why. The views across the estuary are truly stunning and
I could have spent the rest of the day just watching the time go
by. If you fancy giving Levington at visit then make sure you take
a visit to The Ship Inn, the food is great, but get there
early to get a table.
After winning
The Calor
Village of the Year® for East England, Levington went
forward to the national final which they also won. The
competition recognises and encourages vibrant,
self-sustaining village communities which, irrespective of size,
have made the best of local opportunities to maintain and
enhance the quality of life for all residents.
We would like to congratulate everyone in Levington who has been
involved in the competition and the creation of
the Levington website.
