Wangford is situated just off the A12 about 3 miles north
west of Southwold.

Wangford, "Wang" is a saxon word for 'an open field' so the
name suggests a river crossing by an open field possibly
where four roads join the A12 to cross the river Wang.
The Church
The parish church is dedicated to St. Peter and St.
Paul and is all that remains of a Cluniac Monastery
founded here before 1159 as a dependancy of Thetford. The priory
buildings adjoined the south side of the church, now called Abbey
Lands. The last remaining portions of the Priory were demolished in
the late 19th century.

A bit of History
The community of Wangford is mentioned in the Doomsday
Book.
In 1513 after
Edmund de la Pole was executed by Henry VIII and Henham was
granted to
Charles Brandon, first Duke of Suffolk. This land also included
the village of Wangford.
At one time the village had six Pubs, and its own law
enforcment, and when the London to Yarmouth Coach service started
it became a regular stop where horses were changed or rested and
travellers refreshed themselves.
Church Street and the High Street were once full of shops, with
everything from a laundry to a bootmaker.
Wangford today
The High Street is a much quieter place now since the
bypass was finished in 1977. However it is a still a thriving
community with many events arranged at the Community Centre. Being
under 4 miles to the sea the area is popular with visitors and
the village has a variety of accommodation available from
where to base your stay.
