Barrel Fair

WESTLETON BARREL FAIR COFFEE MORNING AND CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PARTY

The Annual Coffee morning will take place on Saturday 3rd December between 10.30 and noon in the Village Hall. Coffee and Mince pies will be served. Everybody welcome to come along and see the photos and accounts, to offer help for next year etc.

In the afternoon we will be holding the Christmas Party for all Westleton and Middleton School Children from 3.00 to 5.00. Grandchildren very welcome as well. A list will be put in the Village Shop or phone 648378 to give names.

Now seems an appropriate time to remind you all of the objectives of the Barrel Fair. First and foremost an enjoyable day on the 19th August for all the Village and visitors. This is a very full day and needs lots of preparation. We, the Committee, are very conscious of our limitations and desperately seek help in any shape or form leading up to and on the day. If you feel you could help please leave your name on the list at the Coffee Morning or phone either Arlette 648378 or Paul 648678 to offer your services.

The money raised on the day is used within the village for many purposes to help and enhance the village. In the past we have donated to the Village Hall, Community Field, Middleton School, Youth Group, Archivists, Firework display. We maintain financially the work done by the gardeners club and Nick Shearme at the War memorial and also the tubs around the village. Some of the tubs are to be replaced this year together with the posts around the War Memorial. We have marquees available for use within the village free of charge and to borrow these please phone Paul 648378. The Committee are always pleased to consider requests for financial assistance within the village so please do ask.

One more date for your diaries - we are organising a 40’s themed party on Saturday 25th February. This will be in the Village Hall between about 3.30 and 6.00 and will have live 40’s music with Tyler/Kemp and a supper. The event is to be for the older members of the Village to thank them for their continued support of the Barrel fair. More details will be published after Christmas.

WESTLETON BARREL FAIR SUNDAY 21ST AUGUST 2011

The fun of the Barrel Fair begins on Wednesday 17th with the ever popular Music Quiz hosted by Doc Cox in the White Horse. Teams of 4ish very welcome and the quizzing usually begins about 8.30 p.m. There are loads of amazing prizes to be won so if you know a little (or a lot) about music come along and join in. On Thursday 18th a film will be screened on the Village Green (if raining in the Village Hall). The title of the film has not yet been decided but come along and enjoy a picnic and glass of wine on the Village Green. The film will be screened from approx. 9.00 p.m. We will then have Friday off to prepare for the big weekend.

On Saturday 20th in the car park by the White Horse the evening will begin with a disco for the chilldren hosted by our own popular DJ Damian. This will begin around 6.30. Following this the first heats of the Westletons Got Talent show will be held. If you would like to enter please phone Carole 01728 648921. Single and duo performances only please as space does not allow for larger groups. There is a junior and adult section with trophies for each section and certificates for all contestants.

We are delighted to have as our band this year BUCKSHEE, one of the most versatile groups of musicians locally. They play a wide repertoire of music including Irish, Cajun, bluegrass, swing, rock and roll and much more. They are bound to get you up dancing, so come along and join in on Saturday 20th. The final of the Talent Show will take place in the music interval.

Barrel Fair day begins at 11.00 a.m. with a procession led by the Town crier and hopefully lots of children in fancy dress. Rob Dunger from Radio Suffolk has offered to open the day for us and we are delighted of his continued support. Radio Suffolk will also have a stand for you to visit, they seem to like coming to the Barrel fair as much as like having them. After the judging of the Fancy Dress by Rob Dunger the much acclaimed Barrel Race between the 2 local hostleries The White Horse and The Crown will take place. This is a very tense race and causes much excitement amongst the supporters.

During the day there will be more Barrel Races and other races for children and adults.

Numerous craft and food outlets will be available. Throughout the day Wayne Burns will be doing his Punch and Judy Show, The Royal Hospital Band will be playing, Rumburgh Morris Dancers, new this year a Childrens petting corner, donkey rides, laser chamber, assault course and many more games to entertain you throughout the day. All the money we raise is put back into the village or local primary school. The Barrel Fair Committee look forward to welcoming you to the Barrel Fair this year.

W.E.A

The Workers Educational Association is the UK’s largest provider of adult education in the voluntary sector. It was founded in 1903 in order to support the educational needs of working men and women who could not afford access to further or higher education. As the state provision of education grew so the function of the WEA changed. It now runs over 10,000 courses each year and reaches over 80,000 adults of all ages and educational back-grounds.

Courses fall into three main categories:

Community Involvement These courses are for people who want to develop their skills and knowledge in order to play a fuller role in their community. The most common courses are in crafts and creative arts, computer skills, health, family learning and courses for people involved in running clubs, societies and trade union branches.

Cultural Studies Courses for people who want to learn more in order to increase their understanding of particular subjects and share ideas with others. The most popular broad subject areas are art, history, literature and science.

Second Chance to Learn Thousands of people have joined WEA courses as a first step back into education through courses in literacy, numeracy, computer skills and study skills.

The Dunwich/Westleton Branch of the WEA comes under Cultural Studies. It is one of the strongest branches in the Eastern Region and meets at Westleton Village Hall, usually on Thursday afternoons. In the last nine years we have run forty courses. Past courses have included - The Life and Times of Thomas Gainsborough, History of Jazz, Understanding Art, Orford Ness, Astronomy for Beginners, The Lost City of Dunwich, Introduction to Archaeology, The Geology of Westleton Common. Westleton Gun Club

Since 1973, on every other Sunday throughout the year, Westleton Gun Club has provided a varied choice of sporting clay targets with each event being more of a social gathering than a competitive shoot. The club actively encourages newcomers of all ages to try their hand at clay shooting in a safe environment supervised by people with many years experience. Westleton Gun Club regularly donates sums of money to local groups and each year an Open Shoot takes place with all the proceeds also going to village funds.

Westleton Airgun Club is affiliated to the Gun Club and meets once a month for a Field Target and Sporting shoot. Anyone of any age with an airgun is welcome to shoot in competition or practice, the range layout changes with the seasons but shooting is always done with the emphasis on safety.
