The Mayor of Woodbridge is
Councillor Les Binns.
Les Binns was born on 6th October 1930 in Hull, Yorkshire to
Agnes and Arthur Binns and had four brothers and one sister.
He volunteered for the Royal Navy in 1947, training as a Sick Berth
Attendant, serving in many areas including the Air Sea Rescue
Service taking up a post at the Royal Naval Psychiatric Unit at
Haslar Hospital, Gosport. He left the Navy in 1955 as Petty
Officer on Reserve.
Les married Sylvia in 1952 and has two sons, Steven and Mark who
now have children of their own. Both boys attended Farlingaye
High School. Les enjoys spending time with his Grandchildren
Rachel, Michael, Natasha, Rob and Holly.
In 1972 he moved to Suffolk with his wife and family, when he was
appointed Senior Nursing Officer at Heath Road Hospital including
management of Foxhall Hospital, St Helens and the Small Pox
Hospital. During this time he was appointed as Magistrate and
served for 23 years, remaining now as Justice of the Peace.
In 1980 Les moved to Woodbridge from Ipswich and became Director of
Nursing responsible for St Audreys and St Clements hospital's and
Hospitals for the Elderly in East Suffolk. These included
Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, Tattingstone and Blythburgh to name a
few. He retired in 1995 and became Voluntary Associate
Director to the NHS Trust.
Les was elected Councillor of Woodbridge Town Council in May 1999
and District Councillor representing Kyson in 2003. In 2007
he was re-elected un-apposed. Les has served on various
committees as a Councillor and also for Cruise, Disability Advice,
Woodbridge in Bloom, Community Hall Management Committee and as
School Governor for Kyson Primary School.
He was made Mayor in May 2001 and has now been made Mayor for the
second time for the year 2008-09. Les says that he feels
privileged to have represented the Town of Woodbridge once, but to
do so for a second time is a real honour.
The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Cliff Cocker.
