Suffolk Economic Summit News Release
Monday 22nd December 2008

43 ideas announced to assist Suffolk through the credit crunch

Community leaders from the public, private and voluntary sectors met recently at a Suffolk Summit in a unique move to support Suffolk families and businesses struggling in the current economic downturn.

There was a clear understanding that economic instability is not just a global and national issue but a local one and has the potential to affect everyone across the county. Whilst it is unclear how the global picture will affect Suffolk, in the medium and long term, the Summit looked at what could be done to prepare for and mitigate against any adverse effects.

The purpose of the Summit was to provide a platform for leaders across all sectors and political parties in the county to put forward clear and practical ideas to combat the credit crunch. A series of 43 ideas were agreed by the 95 delegates who attended. The full list of ideas is attached separately.

Jeremy Pembroke, Leader of Suffolk County Council, said: “Throughout all the economic difficulties that lie ahead, it is the most vulnerable we need to protect as far as we possibly can from the effects of the recession. It is vital we work in partnership to bring Suffolk through the current economic climate. Great commitment has been shown from all delegates who attended the Summit and my council, along with all partners are committed to taking the ideas forward. “
