Adult Safeguarding Board

The Adult Safeguarding Board was formed during 2006 and replaced the Vulnerable Adult Protection Committee. Membership of forum includes representatives from Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Mental Health Partnership Trust, Suffolk and Great Yarmouth and Waveney Primary Care Trusts, Suffolk Fire Service, Age Concern, Suffolk Carers Association, Private Sector Care, Commission for Social Care Inspection, and Suffolk Association of Voluntary Organisations promoting the protection of vulnerable adults from abusive behaviour and practice.

These are achieved by developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating procedures and practice models, which encourage the prevention, detection, and reporting of abuse in all it forms.

Broadly speaking the work of the Adult Safeguarding Board focuses on 4 interlocking approaches to decrease the risk of vulnerable people being subjected to abusive or unacceptable practice and behaviour:

• Working in partnership with vulnerable people to promote their levels of awareness, assertiveness and empowerment.
• Screening out and preventing potential abusers coming into contact with vulnerable people.
• Development of policy and best practice for staff and care providers.
• Training opportunities in order to make sure that all staff members understand their roles and responsibilities in recognising and responding to abusive practice.

Suffolk has been divided into 3 Victim Care Centre areas, each area has an Adult Safeguarding Manager, these are based in Police Victim Care Centres and work in partnership with the Police. There is a further division for Adult Safeguarding Senior Practitioners as shown in the map below:
