Beccles News

Summer is a busy time for the Beccles SNT.We have assisted in the Policing of many local and regional functions such as :The Suffolk show,The Lowestoft air show,Beccles carnival,Gig in the park at Halesworth,The latitude festival at Henham and many other smaller local events. At the same time we have been able to maintain community links.
In June together with our partner agency the Waveney District Council we held a street meeting in Beccles town centre. This was an opportunity for local people to meet and greet local officers and councillors to give their views and opinions as to what they would like to see happen. The main theme that was expressed to the Police officers and Community support officers was that of speeding. We have several officers who are trained in the use of portable speed devices and can respond to such concerns quickly. One of our officers has recently been trained to train other officers in their use and so our ablity to respond to further requests is improved.
Summer is also when friends and families organise social functions such as Barbecues where alcohol is often served.Research has shown that incidents of drink driving also increase in the summer months. The Beccles SNT has recently taken part in the annual TISPOLI summer drink drive campaign. As a resut 88 test were carried out in the month of June with 4 being postive .This equates to 3.5% being positive.Whilst the figures are encouraging,it is dissapointing that 4 people still chose to drink whilst unfit through alcohol.

Crime within The Beccles cluster SNT continues to fall with an overall reduction in crime to end June 2008 (Compared to same period the previous year) of 9.8%.
The detection rate has also increased to 55.5%

Stray Dogs - New Regulations

New national regulations, which come into force on 6th April 2008, will mean that Suffolk Constabulary will no longer be able to take in stray dogs at any police stations.

Section 68 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, removes the power of the police to seize or receive stray dogs handed in by the public.

The responsibility for dealing with stray dogs will rest solely with the local authorities.

Mike Shields, Superintendent at Suffolk Police, said: "Currently, when someone has lost or found a dog the information is collated by the police and the local authorities. With the introduction of the new regulations, all cases of lost or found dogs should be reported to the local authority only.

"This should make it easier for the public with only one point of contact and will increase the chances of owners being reunited with their dogs and will also free up staff within police stations to deal with other duties."

Suffolk Police will still be responsible for taking reports of criminal offences to do with dogs and for investigating these. These include dangerous dogs, dogs worrying livestock, and theft of dogs. Where necessary the police will still have powers to seize dogs for such offences.
