Sibton remains an entity in its own right despite the growth of
nearby Peasenhall during the Victorian period when Smyth’s Drill
Works brought work and prosperity to an otherwise totally
agricultural area. Sibton still has its local public house, the
White Horse, and a nursery school which is in the same building as
the original village school. The village shop in Pouy Street
is now a private house and Sibton has to rely on Peasenhall for its
post office and shops. Nevertheless there are various small
enterprises in the area which continues to flourish as a community.
At its highest point Sibton is the site of the East Anglian Ozone
monitoring station and when ozone levels are broadcast Sibton often
features on the national News!
Sibton retains its close
links to neighbouring Peasenhall and the two parishes have
worked together to produce a joint Parish Plan.
As in many Suffolk villages there is a pressing need for affordable
housing. The parish councils are progressing a local affordable
housing scheme with the Rural Housing Trust to help resolve
this.
