AGM 2006 - Roll of Honour

We were lucky enough this year to have the pleasure of involving a number of enthusiastic young people from excellent youth organisations throughout Suffolk at our event.  Some showcased, in their own inimitable way, their experiences of engagement and participation within their organisations, and others applied to win the President's Award - an award given to groups of young people who have worked together to benefit their organisation.  All of the young people who attended and took part truly energised our event with their zeal and passion - not only for their organisations and for what they believe needs to be done, but for what they are doing already to improve life for themselves and their peers in Suffolk. To quote Positive Change for Young People in Waveney 'we are a big part of the present and a 100% of the future!'

Level 2 Youth Project, Felixstowe

Introducing:

  •  Alex Stewart
  •  Harry Stewart
  •  Helena Howard

Who gave an interesting Powerpoint presentation about Level Two, their roles as youth representatives and the challenges and hurdles they face. If you would like a copy of their presentation please email youngsuffolk@suffolkonline.net

Positive Change for Young People in Waveney

Introducing:

  • Sian Johnson
  • Lewis Hugman
  • Beccy Learner
  • Becky Warner
  • Camilla French
  • Rory Lark…

Who performed ‘HOW, WHAT & WHY’ - the reasons why they formed in their own words.  They showed how they worked together by peforming a group task - the cup game - where all of them work together to pick up a cup using string and sticks! This multi-representational group first came together in April 2006, mainly as a result of the need for agencies to implement ‘Having My Say’ county strategy. The group will ensure that young people have a voice in the consultation process and be involved with other agencies in the design, delivery and review of services. The group didn't mince their words when it came to voicing their views on education 'the teachers are too laid back' and 'not enough is spent on helping us work together better'.  The partners who support the group are MV, Youth and Connexions Service and Waveney District Council.

For more information or to find out how to join the group, please email: donna.darton@connexionssuffolk.org.uk

Supporting Contemporary Adolescence (SCA)

Introducing:

  • Troy Duporte who gave a brillant overview of SCA and its involvement within the voluntary sector - this was delivered without the use of a prompt card!
  • Shanon Collins & Lea Frere who  talked eloquently about their participation in the involvement of ‘YOB’ (Youth Of Britain)
  • Robyn Giddings who talked about an organised band event in Debenham and her involvement.
  • Dan Wright who delivered a poignant poem about his involvement in MV

Millennium Volunteers
A Poem by Dan Wright

Now here is a story all about
how young people these days can stop feeling down and out

It's for people who are 16 - 24
And how they can get confidence, experience
and plenty more.

They can meet new people and learn new skills,
it keeps them off the streets,
and they can still get thrills...

Millennium Volunteers is here to keep us out of the shade
so we can get priceless certificates without any grades.

It benefits the community and also benefits us,
we get noticed by the Home Office which must be a plus!

They dont have to do it, the choice is theirs
although they are less fortunate, MV really cares.

They are no set days to complete their hours,
whenever they've got free time they have the powers.

MV is here to help us get more - it keeps us off the street and
run-ins with the Law.

Getting a job is what I require -
Doing well for myself, that is my DESIRE!

The President's Award

First Prize went to GFS Platform who won the first ever Presidents Award presented by our President Anne Dunford, OBE! Ruth and Ella Warren and Abbie Owens, as representatives of the whole team, picked up the cheque and accepted the trophy. The remaining team members are:

Louise Ladbury
Jessica Reid
Emma Clemets
Jason Park
Jere Tidey
William Emmens
Jonny Moore
Simon Warren

Their early bird application, attention to detail and their enthusiasm and unwavering committment, even in the light of some disappointment along the way as they pursued their goal to buy a portabcabin, really impressed the panel (Anne Dunford, Sarah McNaughton and Sam O'Brien, 21).  GFS now have space for things to do and places to go and are able to concentrate on activities the whole group can get involved in - particularly teaching and delivering messages about issues that effect young people through the medium of puppets (pictures of Broccoli Spears and friends are already on this website!).  The money is going towards more resources and more puppets!

Second Prize went to Level 2  (the group already mentioned above) who also impressed the judges with their application about the formation of Tru Soldiers - a street dance group consisting of members who are keen to strut their stuff to raise money for their organisation.  In addition to those who came and represented Level 2 - members are:

Katie
Lilly
Kerry
Jordan
Barney
Dani
Natel
Laura
Amy
Ellen
Louise
Frances
Emma
Abi
Travis

Third Prize went to Positive Change for Young People in Waveney - the group already mentioned above - who specifically formed so that they could have a voice within organisations who are delivering services for young people.  In addition to those who attended our event, the rest of the team members are:

Suki Gohel
Jason Riley
Jethro French
Helen Hume
Eric Price
Sebastian Roberts
Lee Cuthbertson
Betti Smith
Zoe Moyse
Becki Masterson
Liam Chapman
Fran Lake
Katherine Meades
Lyanne de Amorin

All groups are a true representation of participative working at its best, and Young Suffolk are proud to name them all on this web page Roll of Honour!
